Topic: Feeding clownFish - Please HELP! Posted: January 18 2009 at 9:11pm |
Hey guys,
So I got 2 new clownfish for my tank yesterday, they're my first fish and I don't really know how to feed them. I bought some flake food and some Mysis shrimp. How often should I feed them? How do you feed them the flake food? How do you feed Mysis? Also, I tried adding some food today, they ate some, but it seemed like the filter pulled some of the food out of the tank before they could get to it. Advice would be VERY appreciated!!! I feel bad for the little guys, they always look hungry - they swim around and seem to be looking for food - should I be worried?

What kind of clowns did you get?
For the most part, they will eat just about anything you introduce. When feeding flake food, I try to hold it under the surface of the water and use a powerhead to disperse it. Otherwise it may remain on the surface and be swept into the overflow. With the mysis, it shouldn't be such a concern, but you will want to get most in the water column and not left on the surface.
You can feed twice a day, but only feed as much as they will consume in about 1 minute. Leftover food will foul the water if not consumed by detrivores.

Thanks so much! It's about 1-1/2"- 2" When I added flake food, the food seems to fly over the tank and it seems like they have a hard time finding it?

What type of clowns?  Adult?  I have always kept maroons and they will not eat flake.  I am sure everyone may have their own way of feeding but heres my two cents.  I feed a combo of squid, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and a pellet food.  When feeding the frozen food i place about two cups of tank water in a cup, then use a turkey baster to "target" feed.  My female will eat right outta the baster.  I feed until they stop showing interest in the food, which might be to much, but i would rather change the water more then think they are starving.

Also, try turning off your filter when you feed for a bit.

I always turn off the filters for a while when I feed.

I try to lob the frozen cube right onto the koralia or maxi mod. It gets stuck to the grate and as it thaws the pieces are pulled in and then spewed out all over the tank. Makes a really cool display to watch, all the critters get a chance (we have some piggish fish that will hog given a chance) and it blows it right onto just about every coral in the tank as well. No more target feeding!

Good point...filters off, powerheads on. Spread the wealth! (that was really not an Anti-Obama sentiment...really.)

I used to feed cylopeese and brine shrimp mixture one day a week. I try to soak them in garlic and amino acid. Every other day it's flake (50% green, 50% protein) Formula 1 and 2.
My b&w misbarred perc's would go nuts for it.
Also, when I add a clip of seaweed, they go for it too sometimes.
