Topic: Filtration for 12g Nano -- ??? Posted: February 05 2008 at 3:09pm |
|
I'm setting up a 12g nanocube. It has three compartments in the back. Need some direction on what to put in those compartments, esp. if you have a nano too -- filter material, carbon, LR, etc. Getting some LR, LS, and LW tomorrow from an established tank, but a clue about the compartments would be good (since I'm clueless). Thanks! Any comments?

First chamber I have the heater and a sponge (I also put a little floss in the overflow which I change daily).
2nd chamber rubble in the bottom, I've removed the black plastic covering and have a small compact flourescent shining in on a small ball of chaeto in the top half of the chamber (refugium).
Nothing but the pump in the last chamber

I put my carbon in one of those little bags. The rubble is an excellent suggestion, make sure it's live. Post on here - people probably have rubble they can give you. I used to break up Utah rock and put in in my refugium for just that.
Now....all I have is a nano.

I have one of the sponges with a bag of GFO on top in the first chamber. Second chamber is a bag of Seachem Purigen and a bag of carbon. Last chamber is heater and pump. I clean the sponge 2 or 3 times a week, and do a 20% water change weekly with the Catalina NSW from Petco. I feed pretty heavily, and was having a hard time with algae until I added the GFO. It is Warner Marines PHOSar, which is more granular than most GFO's and therefore more condusive to running in a bag.

Mine is similar to SLC84103. In the overflow chamber I have some live rock rubble in the bottom with filter floss on top which I change every other week. Second chamber is the refugium with a 9w fluorescent fixture attached to the back panel. I keep a clump of cheato in the refugium which I have to cut back about every other week. The third chamber is the heater and the return pump which I upgraded to a Maxi-Jet 800. I also run activated carbon in the third chamber as well. I change that out with the floss every other week. I also make sure to do a 1 gallon water change once a week. I have found that this is the best way to keep everything happy. Lastly I added a Korelia Nano powerhead to the tank and now the flow is great!
A bit more than you asked for, but I think they are all important items. Make sure to remove the bio balls and the ceramic tubes that came with the tank. They really aren't good for much.

I also have a Nano Cube but mine is a 24g and I was wondering the same thing. Right now I have two sponges in the left compartment, 1 sponge and the bio balls + ceramic tubes and activated carbon in the middle compartment and just the powerhead return in the final compartment. What would everyone here suggest I do to properly alter my filtration?
