I was in Aquatica yesterday and that has to be the best store in the state.......Also another thing I noticed was that at Birdworld, they post the day that the fish were put in their tanks...this way you now how long the store has been monitoring them and know if there has been any illness....
All of my fish will be purchased online were they will send you a picture of the fish they are sending....as well as give you a 15 day garantee......I also know the markup is big enough at the LFS that they can afford to offer a garantee.....but all of the closed minded hobbiest in Utah are so adjusted to being led around like stupid sheep that noone has demanded a garantee.....Aquatica has a three day like stated by Gside....The Aquarium offers at least a 24 hour......
As I stated earlier.....for those idiots who bashed me without reading what I wrote.......Chris is a great guy who knows alot about Salt and Freshwater tanks.....We have had plenty of intelligent conversations about the subject......and I know that if he had been there, my neighbor would not have had the problem.......It was blown way out of propotion and like he said in his opening statment......It was not a good Idea for me to let him post using my username......
I am new to the forum but not new to the hobby by any means.....the tank I have now has been running for over 4 years.......and it is not my first.......as for my neighbor.....he has been around fish tanks for over 30 years....he grew up in Cali and has owned more than four tanks......The one he just set up is his fourth tank but had not had one since coming up here for school at the U......so he has been around and lost plenty of fish to know that it happens........He is just pissed at the poor customer service.....I guess he is just used to dealing with stores in Cali where everyone gives a 15 day policy and treats customers that spend thousands in there stores like they have seen them before......

I sometimes wonder when we have a new person who only has a posting to say bad things about someone or someplace....
And, a post that raves about one store while bashing another makes me curious.
Kris, if you are reading this, thank you so much for helping me with my juveniles. You will always be my hero! Give Carrie a hug for me? And, do tell Amber that I have a few babies that are going to "the big tank". She can visit them when ever she wants to be jealous?

"but all of the closed minded hobbiest in Utah are so adjusted to being led around like stupid sheep"
I read the page 2 posts before reading the entire thread. I agree with Suzy. It appears to me that this hobbyist and perhaps his neighbor as well, may be more dissatisfied with his life than with the LFS. Why should we bother giving such a person the time of day?
I've seen even drip acclimated cleaner shrimp die within minutes of being released into the tank. Shrimp are easily shocked to death. maybe they have a heart attack? The setting up of 4 tanks in 30 years does not make the person so experienced that they cannot learn something more
The prices that our LFS charge has been determined by local market conditions. Higher livestock prices outside the Wasatch Front may be led by a market that demands a guarantee. No guarantee usually means lower prices.
I recently read a post here from a person that moved from SLC to Phoenix He told us that prices there are triple what we pay along the Wasatch Front. I was shocked yesterday when I made my first visit to Sue's Pet Castle in St George. They have Condy anemones for $30. I admit the last time I bought a condy, perhaps 9 yrs ago, it was $6, but still, it seems to me they are only $15 at Wasatch Front LFS's. And I'll bet that I could find one at Tracy's store, The Living Aquarium, for $20 or here on the WMAS MB for $10 or less.

To start I just want to state that I am not on here to just "flame" fish4u....it was not my intention to single them out with my comment at the end of my last post.....I feel that should apply to any store...whether a fish store or a department store......
I guess I want to say that Chris is great....and I have writen that in more than one post on this forum.....My last post came after reading this from someone who "Represents" WMAS....did you forget it says Presidency under your name.....
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SALT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quit winning like a little girl. Ive had several fatalities on the way home. You got it home and in the tank. Be happy for that. IMO you are lucky you got anything from FISH4YOU. If you've been in the Hobie for anytime longer than a day you know that salt has no GUARANTEE. Should I complain to my LFS cause my freaking Ray just ate my black clown?
This just shows me that this forum must be desprate for leadership.....

wow .. talk about a turn of tides!!! ... I think this thread got WAY out of control .... I think I will pipe in here and say this .........
I am sorry you had such a bad experience with fish4U ... as I have never been in that store I cant say for sure what I think about it .. however I take what people say here on the board seriously .. and I would go there in a second ... flaming a LFS dose no good .. I have had very bad experience at several stores and will not shop there again .. but I dont get on here and bash them do to 1 bad experience ... I just dont shop there anymore ...
I am also sorry you where flamed here at Utahreefs.com ... and I will also say I am a little surprised to see what was posted toward you .... however on the other hand .. it would have been better on your part to mellow out just a little .. and word things differently ... I understand you where upset and in the heat of the moment posted what you did .. you also have to understand that in salt water (as stated before) there is NO guarantee ... for example .. my wife bought me a really large cabbage coral from a LFS .. they told her it would do just fine in an SPS system ... well .. it took out over 500.00 worth the SPS ... I did not jump on here and post bad things about them do I? nope .. cleaned up the mess and went on with life ...
crap happens .,..

i want to say in thank you for stickin up 4 me eagle.
i know that not all of the comments made were aimed at me, nor were they all bad, but for the ones that were:
i am just pissed knowing that if i had bought this shrimp back home there would not have been an issue for bringing it back after it died 2 1/2 hours after i bought it. the people in utah are soooooo sheltered when it comes to saltwater tanks. i have WORKED at many different stores in cali and they all offer at least a 15 day. they also use quarantine systems to study the fish before putting them out to sell i know the huge markup that is involved. just an example the phos reactor that is on top of the fridge in fish4u for 79.99. in cali it sells in the store fo 29.99. are you kidding me. and yes there are some expenses that need to be covered by a markup. but come on $50
dont worry i wont be back in fish4u ever again. what i may do is open a store next door called fish4ur tank. bring some cali influence into the valley and show these stores how an aquarium store should be run.
i feel great sorrow for the poor 'sheep' in utah that dont know how things are done outside of your 'salty' bubble.

It's one thing to take a higher road and let the store resolve your
issue with them and it's another to get that resolution and then. .
bash them online.
Also bashing long time members of this club doesn't help us sympathize with you. . . .
How bout this. . . . . rather than making you see it from my point of view - I'll just agree with you and be a. . .

Most interesting, I believe the Aquarium has a NO GUARANTEE policy.
I agree with you that It would be nice if there was a guarantee on livestock. I had a angel die from bountiful to Farmington. I mentioned it in passing the next day and to my astonishment they gave me another. Hes doing great. I neither wanted or expected the replacement as I UNDERSTAND the policy's.
I'm sure in California they have a little laxer policy due to there fish not having the markup of the middleman. Get the middle man out of our LFS ordering process and maybe they can afford to give some sort of guarantee.
Just out of curiosity have you seen the death rate that the LFS's have to deal with? They don't get a guarantee on their order.
Ive been around "fish" for 40 years. I have 4 salt tanks now and my kids have 7 fresh and one salt now. I defiantly don't consider myself an expert in any way. HOWEVER one thing that I have learned is that these things happen. Ive also educated myself on how the lfs's operate and why they have the policy's that they have.
I wont order livestock off line due to there high death rate. Ill pay more and risk the LFS. Thats not due to being a "sheep" its due to my playing the odds. In all reality after you pay the shipping you pay as much, if not more than the lfs.
I'm sorry if my calling your post, "Whining like a little girl " offensive. It seamed like you were more interested in your own selfishness. The store did offer you compensation and you took it. Next time try talking to the owner (Kris) himself and maybe you wont be flaming his store like this.
(I will try to quit muttering McGregor when read this post.)

Dion....I apreciate the intelligent response to my childlike rant about your comment........We are all still learning to deal with our tanks, as well as each other........
Like I said I enjoy talking and dealing with kris and my advice to my neighbor is to deal only with him.......I have a guy at vivid that picks my corals and fish for me and when I put an order for 225 or more it is free shipping....this is pretty easy in saltwater.........we usually place at least one order a month and I usually buy for three or four guys at a time........I guess it all comes down to personal prefrence and to each their own......
It has been a great thread and I am sure the talk of the town for the last couple days.....hopefully the stores will at least talk about their policy......

I gained a great deal of respect for Dion when we had a little spat over something. I fully expected him to keep the fanning the flames (as I had been doing, mind you) when he got all mature like and me feel bad. Dion's a thumbs up guy.
Fish4U has always been nice to me. I had 2/4 peppermint shrimp die in the bag on the way up to Logan last week. When I called them to ask what the policy was (nothing was printed on the receipt) they were nice enough to credit me for the two shrimp.
I think a lot of these problems are in how you approach them. I'll continue to shop at Fish4U. I don't expect 100% from any business I shop at. Watch/establish a track record, you know? (Here comes my shameless plug for Aquatic Dreams...) Aquatic Dreams has been really good to me, and even though I've had stuff die from them after I got it, I haven't let that ruin my experience with their store. As such, they've been cool and given me some great prices on GORGEOUS frags.
I'm sure Fish4U will do the same. Just show them what a loyal customer can be and I bet they'll show you what a loyal business can be.

Kris and Kerri at Fish-4-U are and have always been great to me. Yes, I've had things die from all LFS I've purchased from. It's just the risk you take with livestock, but you can learn to be very selective in your purchases and wise in your acclimation, all dependent upon the live critter you choose which helps to mitigate some of the risk. Next time you visit a LFS, ask how many animals they lose while being shipped from their supplier.
Yes, there are LFS's in my mind that are better than others, but I'll keep that info to myself. Who wants to reveal their favorite fishing spot (no pun intended)?

My 2 cents:
Ever hear the saying "You can get more done with honey than with vinegar"? Sometimes I get an attitude that I don't realize I am projecting, especially when I feel I am wronged! This puts the other person on the defensive and can lead to problems.
I would like to see a policy for all LFS like Bird World has, posting a date, or not even selling livesock until all in a shipment are acclimated, This may be restrictive to a LFS. However, I would be willing to pay a little more for this service.
I just bought a 90g setup, with livestock. Even with the disruption, all of the livestock survived the move. I had still used the environment they were used to. I purchased two small chromis from a LFS and two days later they both died. I assume the stress of too much change was the cause. I suspect that no matter how careful we are, this hobby will still be a gamble.
I now liken this hobby the same as I do a visit to Wendover! I just think that overall I would rather spend my money gambling on this potentially more rewarding hobby!
Thanks,

I can tell you that you'd be hard pressed to find a pet store better than Fish 4 U. Search around the state and give it a try.
I can also say that you'd be hard pressed to find a store in California better than Fish 4 U. Trust me, I've spent more time in California pet stores than just about anyone.
Adam
This entire thread summed up- you had a bad experience. You vented. We all feel bad for you. Blaming a fabulous fish store won't help, nor bring you sympathy. Everyone supports those great stores and is happy to stick up for them.
