 Topic: Yellow headed jawfish

Does anyone have a Yellowheaded Jawfish ? How long ? And what type of setup do you have ? I would like to take another try (  not having any luck) at this beautiful and fun to watch fish...

I have had one in my 120G for about a month now. I have about 3 1/2 inches of CaribSea Special grade reef sand. This is a GREAT fish. He is always aware of everything going on but not scared. I thought they needed to be target fed but he will dart out of his hole to immediately take any food that comes within about 18 inches.

I had a yellow headed sleeper goby. Close enough? I loved him, but he
committed suicide....
I'm going to get another one....

I had one that I enjoyed for about 4 months, until he jumped out of my tank. I've heard that you should cover your tank if you want to keep one and I tried but the plexiglass covers I made got salty real fast and obscured my lighting. So I ended up getting rid of the covers. I sure enjoyed my yellow headed jawfish while I had it

I had one for about a year before my blue tang harrassed him to the point of jumping. I even had egg crate on top of the tank to prevent this but he jumped right through it. Poor thing lay on top of the egg crate and was fried by the lights.

I have also just gotten info. from an online pet store that the number and health of the fish I do have, that it may be more of a shipping(to the LSF , need to try and wait a week before picking them up) and acclimation issue.They also stated while I have had worse luck than most, it is unfortunately not far from the norm. for the Pearly(Yellowheaded Jawfish)Jaw . And also suggested I only try to keep one. They to me are one of the most beautiful and the most personality fish I have seen and will try again in the near future . Thanks  all please send any other info. you may have on this fish. Also what kind os sand bed do I need was told gravel would be fine but have read different...

I currently have one in my 70 gallon. It is one of my favorite fish. The first time I tried to add a jawfish to my tank it died within 24 hours. I then tried again later and once again within 24 or so hours it had died (I never could figure out why they were dying). My final, and successful attempt, was when someone on the message board was selling their pearly that they had had in their tank for a while. This one acclimated fine and is doing Great!
Some of my observations with this fish is it is a good idea to initially setup the tank with this fish in mind. When I set up my tank I put pvc rings in the sand to help support my rock structure when the sand around it was dug out. Also when I made my tank hood I made it completely enclosed so that the fish doesn't have the oppertunity to jump out.

I used to have a 10 gallon tank with just yellowheaded jawfish in it. I loved them. I would get just one, unless you want to get a group (i.e. I wouldn't get two). Make sure they have some larger gravel pieces so they can make a home.

I had a pearly jaw in my old 55 tank. It is our favorite fish. It had been in my tank about 2 years. Everything was fine until I put a frag at the front of its hole. I knew it was angry about disturbing, but I did not know it would committed suicide to protest it. I was very sad. My family always want to put another back to our new tank. Some article suggesteds not keeping royal gramma and pearly head jawfish in the same tank, because royal gramma would steal jaw's hole. 
I LOVE PEARLY JAWFISH.

 How would I prepare my tank for a pearly jawfish? Should I put the live sand (will the live sand change the water much?)in only the section of my tank where hopefully it would stay ? And will it be a problem cleaning the tank with the live sand ? The PVC pipe is a great idea for under the live rock. I do need to upgrade my filter system(using orginal filter) and also using a protein skimmer, which seems to be working fine for the fish, shrimp, snails and crabs I already have . I would just like a few fish that have more personality .

As long as your system supports fish well then it should support a Jawfish. Here is the recommendations given to me when I was researching a pearly jawfish.
1. They need a deep sand bed, some suggest very deep, mine is only 3" and my jawfish does ok in that.
2. They need rock rubble to build their hole.
3. They will jump so you must take measures to prevent them from jumping out of your tank. Even small holes must be covered.
I think the time when you are most likely to lose them is before they have had time to build a burrow. Once they have built a burrow they seem fairly hardy.
As far as tankmates, I have kept mine with clownfish, midas blenny, bicolor blenny, clown goby, tangs, foxface, scooter blenny, spotted manderin, and a orchid dottyback. By far the orchid dottyback is the most territorial and mean to the jawfish but my jawfish seems to be doing fine.

Thanks, Trial and error is not only sad but also becomes expensive and some LPS really don't offer a lot of advice . It seems better to talk to those with the same in common. Here in SW Penna. not a lot (that I know) of LPS's.

I kept the tank for about 1 year and a half. I had about 4 inches of substrate and a couple of smaller rocks. I had about 8 yellowheads in the same tank (no other tank mates, except some snails and hermits).

Just got 2 yellowheaded(nice size) jawfish March 31,2006 (Wet Pet Pitts. Pa. very helpful .) Went in to see what they had low and behold about 12 jawfish just swimming around (They had no place to hide.) They had been in the store approx. 3 weeks , one thing the saleman did was to feed them and then picked my 2 out . He did say these fish are hard to keep but I have been reading on them and 1 site said they like to eat often ( so maybe mine had starved these guys eat about 3 x small amounts.) They seem to hide during daylight but come out more when it get dark. Does anyone know how to tell male and female (one seems more forward than the other and the shy one keeps fixing the den.)
Thanks for all your ideas and hopefully they will do well for me just love to watch them...
