Thanks again to Chad AKA (Badfinger) for letting me borrow his old red sea max hood, It has given me the chance to take mine off and work on this LED build with out rushing through it Anyway I guess we can start with this .... The Last pic of this hood
being stock =) the stock lights fit in a 5x20 inch space and I'm debating if I should try to fit everything in there or go bigger... what do you guys think? I want to pick out a heat sink asap

I would say go bigger if it were me because LED's won't cover the tank as evenly as the T5's did.

I would go bigger. The LEDs that I have seen don't have much of a spread.

This might help you visualize light spread with the different optics.

I'd go as big as you can fit in the hood--the leds will spread some, but not near as much as the fluorescents did. Heat sink usa sells several widths in the length you want. I've got one 7.25" on my bc29 which lights the tank pretty evenly.

Alright So this is what the hood looks like stripped down My tape is a little rusty but if you look right at the 8 inch mark... it is where the bottom plate of the hood lines up with the top... so the heat sink I'll be looking for needs to be under 8 inches wide X 20 inches long and maybe just 1 1/2 thick the maximum length under the hood is 23 1/2 inch but I'm going to reserve the two ends for Fans... I was thinking about putting the fans through the top of the hood but.. the maximum working space in the hood is just 2 inches depth which will make things a little tricky... and there will be no way to mount fans above the heatsink unless they where sticking out of the top of the hood which I really don't want to do at all ... or if I cut into the heat sinks? the top is slightly tapered so maybe it will be possible to do fans with out taking out that much on the heat sink

Another thing I've had some thought about is the UV LEDS I was thinking about just working 2 into the build somewhere.
I was also thinking of just doing 24 total LEDS...
11blue 11white 2uv Thoughts on this?
Thanks - Nick

Can you mount a couple of small fans on the side, to blow air down the length of the fins? If I understand correctly that will give you better heat transfer as well.

Yeah I mean stock thats how its kind of already set up except Id like to add a few more fans Another thing I'm thinking about is keeping the stock timer in there.... It already has a 10w Led Driver in it for Moon lights (Not too sure if it would be smart to switch out these leds or not?) and already has two fans hooked to it and then power lead for the main project

Nick, you can notch out the top of the heatsink to mount the fans. If you cool the top with one fan in, one or two out the heatsink will stay cool.
On mine, I mounted a 92mm fan on the center of the heat sink in a notch, it blows air in. I then used the two original 60mm fans in stock location to push air out of the hood. If I run the fans the heat sink will stay cool to the touch, even with 24, 3.7V leds running at 990mA. Also, if you are blowing air directly onto the heat sink it takes less volume/speed (read quieter and smaller fan) than if you are trying to use fans to pull air in then out of the hood and just have it flow around the heat sink.
If I don't turn the fans on then it will get hot enough you can only touch it for a second or two.
I'd recommend one 60-90 mm fan set down in the heat sink, and two or three small fans pulling (you can get as small as 40mm, which is about 1.5") air out of the hood.
Example: x EEEEXEEEE x
where the small x's are small fans blowing out the sides, and the large X is a fan blowing on the heat sink, the E's are the heat sink.

I can't wait to see this progress. Let me know when you get the stuff in and want to get'er done. I will clear off the bench and we will knock it out in no time. I have the solder gun, dremel, meters, the whole enchilada. My fixture I did the article on is still running strong on the Fulana 12 in my sons room. The corals seem to love it an it looks great. This is so much easier than most people think and it looks better than most old time reefers will give it credit for since they are still thinking things are like it's 1999 =)
it's a bigger challeng on the big and deep tanks to make it work but for these nanos it is the perfect solution!

Well Its finally finished... I was able to use 4 existing holes to hold the heat sink in place along with some home made brackets.. I also retrofitted 6 fans in there 3 blowing in and 3 blowing out I also cut the stock opening a bit larger, with the larger opening I then had to make a larger splash guard... I found a
few threaded acrylic blocks at regional supply and used them along with some
acrylic square rod and bit of weather stripping which turned out great.. also in this next pic you can see the leds in place basically they are broken down like this (Red Wire = 6 Blue) (Black Wire = 6 White) (White Wire = 3 Blue/3White) each colored set has their own potentiometer (Dimming ability) so you can pretty much come out with any color you like And here it is finally finished and on the tank.... (I'll get some more pics asap) Also just wanted to say thanks again to Terrence for really helping out he invited me over and worked on this thing with me for a few hours =) also if your looking to do your own LED build.... make sure to check his article out it should help a bunch or atleast save you some headache http://www.utmas.com/general/diy-led-light-for-your-small-tank-for/ Although I dunno about the <$200 part also I've already fragged a bunch of sps from my 210 to try in this tank =) so I'll try to keep the growth/color updated with pics
