I was just wondering how many people do run skimmers. I run mine 24/7 and couldn't do without it. I am actually going to buy a larger one

Yep I believe in skimming alot, the more the better! That's why all my sps grow like crazy.
I would even say that a newer tank should be skimmed

I disagree that it can't be too big (skimmers, that is  )
On smaller tanks, if the skimmer neck is too wide and the bioload is too little, it can be very difficult to create the proper foam "head" within the skimmer neck.
This leads to the skimmer having to be set "super wet" to produce anything at all - like "weak tea" consistency
And they are finding out that "super wet" skimmate is composed of less organic materials and more calcium

So should you run a skimmer on a new tank? I had read not to put a skimmer on for 4-6 months so that the good stuff can take hold and not get pulled out. I have a ASM G2 to put on mine but haven't yet.

My skimmer has been going since day one on this setup. There is NO WAY I will ever go back to skimmerless.
I really want one of the new ATI Powercones but they are out of my price range. I love my Bubble Magus. Every issue I have had with it was caused by me and not the skimmer.
My tank may be too clean for softies but my SPS love it and I love them.

I've been a firm believer in good skimmers from day 1. If I had the money, I would put an RK skimmer on mine.  J/K That may be overkill.

The skimmer is a wonderful gadget. I recommend the skimmer to anyone that desires to use one. I've set up about 2 dozen tanks in the last 13 years and not one of them was set up with a Skimmer. Almost all during that time, I grew all types of coral for profit to support my hobby and for a while to support me.  Julian Sprung, one of the foremost authors in this hobby, has said that a reef aquarium can be set up to do well without a Skimmer, but cannot survive without adequate biofiltration.

You can not separate the two like so many people do. I totally consider my skimmer as part of the biofiltration process in my tank. To say or suggest otherwise is crazy talk.
With all the crap it pulls out, I can't imagine not running mine.

I've ran with a skimmer and without. Honestly I haven't noticed much of a difference either way. I will still run one for safety sake more than anything else.

Begging your forgiveness, but skimming is not biological filtration. Skimming uses no biological processes to perform it's function. It is a process utilizing the chemical and mechanical properties of air, water and organic molecules. Skimming has the benefit of removing organic substances that would otherwise become food for living organisms. By removing that food, more food can be put into the tank to support more fish in the same volume.

The green is Phytoplankton, or more specifically single celled algae. Think about it, what is phytoplankton good for?

I agree completely! Askimmer is a big part of my overall tank health!!
Mark, I wonder why almost 80% of the people in the club run them? Could it be because they want to give their tank every opportunity to thrive? I believe so.

I thought the % of skimmers would be higher than even 80%. I just started using one, however, I totally respect the hobbyists that don't. It requires a more sensitive balance and understanding of your tank!

Most of the people that don't use a skimmer don't grow alot of sps! There might be a very small percentage that can but I really haven't seen many. I would really like to see an sps dominant tank without a skimmer.
