raising shrimp

Two of my fellow founding members, Joe and Cindy Jones of Mountain Mariculture, have raised Peppermint Shrimp and I wouldn't be surprised if Jake Pehrson has as well. It's very difficult and time consuming.

I've raised peppermints in the past and am currently raising mysids. Never tried sexy shrimp but I'm sure there not to different. Need a good first food like rots, copepods, or freshly hatched bbs. Cycopleeze works well as well.

Also need to get them safe from a filter intake or powerhead. Airpumps do well for this.

It's a great food for copepods and shrimp fry. I have the most luck with mysids. They are live bearing shrimp, and raise to feeding size in about 4 weeks.

I got one of those pool filter baskets and a pool net. Tossed some chaeto in the filter basket. Put the filter bin inside the pool bag, put in a bag of mysids and wala. The fry escape through the netting where the adults are to big. That particular tank has a couple linked together so there is about 40g's for the fry to live and grow in. Mysids are canniblas but there seems to be enough space for them to grow. I have to replace the "breeding basket" about every 4 months with full grown shrimp from the other tanks. Mysids have a short life span and if you don't replace the parent colony there will soon be none left to breed.

I also have a ton of copepods and amphipods in this system it is nutty.

I almost ordered a batch of those. they had the special like 4 bottles for $60. I almost took advantage of it. I know a couple of local reefers, none members here though, that wanted to split in order but it fell through.

What is your experience with them. Are you happy with them?

I'm tearing down all of my cultures actually, but thank you. That was a very nice offer. Selling most of the stuff off. We're moving to Oregon in a few months and I just don't want to haul everything.

Hopefully the various members I have sent things to for free over the years will repay the favors when I get myself restablished. My LFS has already promised to ship me everything free of charge when I get up that as a thanks for all the help I have given them. It is nice to find such a great store. There even going to hold my livestock for me and then ship. Truly wonderful people.
