Considering the price of an OM's, it's not a bad idea, if you could DIY one. How would one even begin to go about it, though?
From what I understand the SCWD (er squid, I don't remember the spelling but it's an acronym for something I don't remember) is a comparatively inexpensive device with the same basic goal of alternating flow.

I have one of the SQWD but it looses alot of flow and it can only be used with 900gph pumps or less

A Hayward three-way ball valve could be similar, but they're so expensive that a OM may be cheaper

I have an OM 4 way and I love it, the only thing that I need to modify is that i had to cut back my output flow because it is only coming out of two outputs at a time instead of 4. I also have two of their revolutions that rotate around to direct flow to different parts of the tank, I would definately recomend both. I am going to add more outputs to help increase the flow. don't know how you would diy the om setup though

There have been many discussions at Reef Central about this. In the end, the conclusion is always that it is easier and less expensive to just buy the OM you want. No one has been able to build anything that works as well and costs less.

You could take a gander at Weatherson's sinusoidal valve. Out of all the DIY plastic-carving projects, his looks like the easiest.

Yes Weatherson's valve is nice, but how many of us have the tools necessary to do this? And, in the end, it is not any less expensive than the OM...
