Whats your TDS, where are you located and what type(s) filtration do you use?

Hi Steve. Here's my 2 cents. I've tested RO water from all over (working for MSM). In every place along the Wasatch Front except Magna and sometimes South Jordan and Riverton, R.O. water will test from 0 -30 ppm if the RO is functioning properly. Most common is 10-20 ppm and that's clean enough for a properly setup reef aquarium, IMO.

In Brigham City my TDS usually runs in the low teens. (around 150 before RO)

OK, what am I missing? I realize there are nasty things in the water we want to remove, like phosphates.
However, don't forget that the bulk of what makes up TDS is actually calcium and magnesium. Both of these are actually GOOD things to have in the water.
So as long as you're getting the bad things out, does it really matter if you still have some remaining Ca and Mg?

Ed,
My thoughts on this are: I would like to be in complete control of the additives that are introduced into the tank. By removing most of everything - you are in control. However, if you could remove all but calcium and magnesium (and know the levels) it would be best to leave them.

Thats what I am thinking as well. The DI stuff is new .. well its been on my shelf for a bit but never been wet ..
Brings another question ... when I bought the DI resin it was moist in a bag .. mine dried out .. will it still work? .. or is it toast ..
BTW .. the TDS reading out of the fossit is 1100 ppm (kind of interesting doesnt the FDA say 500ppm is tops for human consumption?) .. the RO/DI is taking it down to 85-110 ppm ..

It's not that I don't care, but just that I don't know.
Maybe that means I don't care enough to find out. Hmmm, that might be my bad.
I do have a feeling, that my RO is still pretty low in TDS, but I honestly don't know why I think this. Crazy, huh?

My water going to my tank is 0 TDS (RODI) and my drinking water is 4 TDS (RO).
Will...if you'd like, bring me a cup and I'll test it for you.

The Lehi City water supply TDS varies from a low of 205ppm to a high of around 250ppm, but usually hovers right around 220 - 221 ppm most of the time...
I have a "cheap Ebay" 6- stage RO / DI that I got for $79 (with extra 'free' filters included) that gets it all the way down to 0ppm... once I removed that after-DI carbon cartridge, anyway 
When I used to live in PG the TDS of my tap water was close to 400ppm 
Back on Long Island, NY it was only 55ppm straight from the tap...

When I lived in PG my home came with a water softener because the tap water was over 400ppm TDS (mainly calcium and magnesium)
Being ignorant, I never added salt to he softener, so I'm sure it stopped "softening" after a month or so...
Within 6 months of moving to Utah I got the first of a total of 3 kidney stones, all calcium-based, all within the first year of moving to Utah (from NY). Never had any kidney problems before I moved here (tap water was 55ppm total TDS back in NY)
Once I started adding salt to the softener I never got a stone again.
Wierd - but interesting...

My tap water is 810 ppm and the water after the RO/DI unit is 72 ppm.
If thats still too high, too bad. I'm not going to spend tons of money changing filters, resins and membranes once a month.
Steve, I'll bring down my TDS meter and we'll test your water, it should be about the same since its coming from the same pipe! lol

Yes bring it down so that I know for sure .. you have a calabrated TDS pin so .. I will calabrate mine to yours .,..
I just replaced the RO membrane and bought new DI resin .. its back to 0 .. so .. I hope it will stay there ...
Steve I still would like to calabrate my TDS to yours ...

I agree with Shane as well. It would be great if you could leave the Ca, Mg and alk, but it's not possible with curent technology. I use RO/DI myself because Like he said I think it's best to start with a blank slate. The Kent DI unit I have has separate cation and anion resin cartridges.
