Topic: Jawfish compatibility Posted: September 17 2007 at 7:09pm |
I have a 30 g tank that currently only houses a jawfish. Being the lone fish, he is not timid and is regularly out of his burrow searching for pods. I want to add something else to the tank but don't want to impose on him. I want something with a different body type (no firefish for example). I was thinking of a trio of Bangaii's but that leaves me with a fairly colorless assortment of fish. I may put a rose BTA in the tank, so no seahorses or pipefish I guess. I just can't think of the perfect fish so any suggestions are appreciated.

They get along great with almost any fish that won't try to eat them. My favorites to keep with them in that size of tank would be the Orchid Dottyback, Midas Blenny, Perculas or Occelaris.

I'd add one of two of Mike's suggestions, and a Yellow Clown Goby

My orchid dottyback is mean. Sometimes it would force my pearly jawfish back into its hole. It might make yours come out less (assuming the dottyback is a jerk -- sounds like Mike's is nice).
My Midas blenny was very mean towards my firefish -- but didn't seem to bother my pearly jawfish. It may have not been mean because it didn't have the chance. The jawfish never strayed too far from its hole.
Hawk fish, manderin (dragnets), algea blenny, fang blenny, small gobies I would say would probably leave the jawfish alone. (Maybe not clown fish -- they get territorial)

My Orchid Dottyback is the most mellow fish in my tank. Maybe mine is tank raised? Midas Blennies are known to not get along with Firefish. Mine gets along with everyone. My Perculas and Jawfish ignore each other. I doubt it would be the same with the more aggressive clownfish though.
One last thought. My Pearly Jawfish in the 120 did stay mostly in/near his hole but at feeding time he would venture 2-3 feet away.

thanks for the input. A hawkfish would be great but I've read several acounts of them bothering cylindrical fish like firefish and some gobies. If people have had long term experience to the contrary, a hawk would definitely be my #1 choice. Dottybacks have an even worse rep with jawfish I thought. I think the clowns could also be territorial esp. if the anemone settles down anywhere near the jawfish's hole. I had already decided on a yellow clown goby too, just forgot to mention.

Hmm, I have never heard of a hawkfish being territorial or aggressive toward other fish (unless it saw the fish as food). I have a longnose and it doesn't bother anything. (The only thing it could bother would be my manderin).
I could see it being curious of the jawfish and sitting and watching the jawfish and stressing it out.
