Lets see, should I say "Jon" or just leave this out for anyone.... hmmm will anyone other than Jon respond???
Can someone please convert these light readings into something more useful for our aquariums? Like can someone convert these into halide watts per square foot or something like that?
80, 200, and 300 mumol m-2 s-1

Do you mean umol m-2 s-1? mu=u=micro
That is the units of photon flux (PAR or PPFD). I'm pretty sure it is abreviated for microEinsteins/m2/s.
The noon sun in the tropics is somewhere on the order of 2000 umol/m2/s

I too was puzzled by mumol but I copied and pasted it here. I'm reading an incredible amount of articles right now, and didn't want to take the time to go convert (plus I'd have to figure out what I'm converting).
I have no idea where our bulbs in our tanks are, but I thought you would have that info on the top of your head (like you did with the noon sun tropics).
By the way, my house was just recently connected to a library server, and it is the greatest thing ever. I've read more in the last 24 hours than I've read in the last 6 months.

I'll do a little searching around later tonight, but it depends on how far away you are from the bulb. That link has some real world data for different bulbs. But I've seen lots of data presented on 250 watt mh 10K bulbs with PAR in the 300 - 500 umol/m2/s range. But I don't know how far away from the bulb this measurement was taken.

I just finished reading that article. Thanks, that is awesome. I like that article more than any of other Sanjay articles. I like the numbers on the pics, very helpful. I am so in favor of the club buying a photometer sometime.

Yes I can. I've printed more abstracts and articles than you can imagine. My eyes are fried, and my highlighter is running low. Not kidding, I've read more about photosynthesis today than I did during a semester of plant biology.

I live on Biosis. I'm on that search oh.... about 6 hours per day here at work. And now, yes about 6 hours per day at home.
I didn't know anyone knew what Biosis was, other than me. Wow, you are pretty nerdy.
