Topic: DIY Kalkwasser Reactor Posted: July 24 2009 at 12:30am |
I decided I am going to start using Kalk and decided I would build my own reactor, I will also be building a effluent chamber, waste container and a substrate reactor. I love building my own stuff whenever possible I will post pics as I go, I hope I get most of it done this weekend. Everything is cast acrylic.

I had my buddy CNC mill a lid out of aluminium to use as my guide for the router. I will use this for the lid, flange, and base of the reactor's all of which are 1/2" cast acrylic.

Here is the base plate and the upper flange, the upper flange does not have the center hole in it yet I will do this after it is put together. I routered a channel that the acrylic tube will sit into making a much stronger joint.
And here is either the waste container or the substrate reactor with no "guts" yet

here is the Kalk reactor all done. I added a ph probe hole in the top because I have a spare ph probe so I can check the ph of the chamber really quick to see if it needs more kalk or not.
Here is the Effluent chamber all done.
Here is the Substrate reactor all done.
And here is the Waste container (still waiting on some parts for this but pretty much done).

For one like mine, it would be around $200. They are built just like Precision Marine stuff. All cast arylic too.

Are you going to have all of your RO water run thru it to your auto top off?
It looks like a great design and if you produce more, I may be intrested in one also.
What is the waste container for?

Yeah it will be inline of my auto top off. The waste container is for my Aqua C skimmer the skimate goes into it. It has a chamber on top to put carbon in, to get rid of the nasty smell and it also will shut down the skimmer when it is full. I will build some for some of you if you are intersted I would like to get like 3 people interested before I start building though if we can. Some of the material you have to have a minium of, so if you are interested let me know for sure.

from experience with my kalk reactor never let your ato fill your tank if it is low only use it as top off I had my ro resivior run out and I filled it and let the top off fill the tank back up was probably 2-3 gallons low and when got back to the tank it was pure white and I lost more than I dare say I have now also set up my reefkeeper2 to turn it off anything past 8.6 as well

That actually crossed my mind. I thought about just putting in a dosing pump and letting it dose at night time and then off during the day.
