I've always been curious about the different Amino Acids/Vitamins people have been putting in their tanks... people like Adam Blundell who crushed up different vitamins to feed his tank /corals etc (I'm wondering if hes still doing this? if so we would like to hear more and on what exactly is being added)

anyway I've been hearing more about amino acids more and more lately especially in the home aquarium... the other day I was watching this youtube video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCLlgZnWMfY&feature=player_embedded#!I think it might have been linked off reefbuilders.com ? (I can't remember.) anyway the guy goes on to mention one of the only things he is dosing is amino acids and it got me thinking about adding Amino Acids/Vitamins

also reading it again off an article Ryan posted today...
http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=44375
the exact quote was:
"I actually had to add Amino Acids and feed the tank more as it had become "too clean". The corals had lightened up and actually stopped growing. After cutting back a bit on the vodka dosage and adding more food the corals once again took off. "

anyway that paragraph got me thinking my 210 sucks/its too clean and the coral has been growing so slow lately but in my 120 things seem to be growing like weeds. and my 210 used to grow corals like weeds but not so much anymore.. Now I'm just assuming amino acids are the miracle grow I need for my corals.   I know things can be better.

So When people say they are dosing amino acids what exactly are they adding to their tank?

I'm looking for any articles out there. so if you know any please link them here

http://grumpyreefer.net/2009/04/14/amino-acids-and-reef-aquariums/
I found this link talking about a few different products offering a few different amino acids Id just like to know if anyone has ever got to try any of these?

Id like to know more about which amino acids corals actually utilize

Anyway I'm dying to learn more =) and I am wanting to experiment the second I can get my hands on some of these products

I dose Aqua Vitro Fuel to my tank for the Amino Acids. Amino Acids are good to dose but you have to be careful. If you go overboard get ready for an algae bloom.

When I started dosing Fuel over a year ago it was into my nano I had at the time. My acans got HUGE and were extremely happy. I figured I should use more if this is how happy it makes everything. Then one day hair algae started creeping up and things were slowly turning bad. I immediately stopped dosing and things improved over the course of a few weeks.

I now dose maybe once every two weeks or so.

Phosphates will also stunt growth, especially in SPS.

LOL Nick!  With how many frags you're always cutting up, they can't be growing that slow Wink

I too use Fuel.  I typically use 2 capfuls twice per week on my 120, once during day feeding and once during a night feeding.  It's about 1/4 of the recommended amount I think.  Some other reefers use Brightwells Coral Amino which is hyper concentrated and you have to use a dropper.

After reading some stuff on aquavitro's fuel this morning people are seeing best results by doing a 2/3rds dose the first couple times and then 1/3 - 1/4 doses from then on

Well I picked up fuel today and also picked up a product called coralamino by brightwell aquatics

I have used fuel in the past but this time I'll be watching for changes

I've also been having phosphate problems in my 210 so I also picked up reef biofuel its most likely the main problem I'm having with stunting sps growth/color so hopefully I can get that down and feed my corals some aminos as well

I'll let you guys know if I see a difference or if I really think coralamino is worth $32 bucks =)

Be careful with that BioFuel! It is vodka on steroids pretty much. Go very slow and take your time. I would refer you to my thread about bacteria dosing.

I would consider using MB7 along with that biofuel and, I agree with Ryan, take it super slow...

Where did you get the Brightwell Coral Amino?

Pretty sure The Aquarium carries it. They carry all of Brightwell Aquatics stuff except the most important, MicroBacter7.

That is nice to hear. The last three times I have been in they didn't have it. They had a sticker once though and wanted like $33 for the bottle I got for $12.

Glad they have it though, they didn't when I was up there about 2 weeks ago.

I think he said he got it at Marinedepot? I just bought mine off of ebay for $12 with free shipping and it will be here Thursday though. I had some ebay bucks that were expiring today so I actually only paid $4 and will use the rest to buy some Aquavitro Fuel

Marine Depot

http://www.marinedepot.com/Brightwell_Aquatics_MicroBacter7_Bacteria_Water_Treatments_Conditioners-Brightwell_Aquatics-BW01220-FIADWTBS-vi.html

The 500mL bottle which will last me FOREVER! I originally thought i was gonna have to use like 5mL a day but then found out that since I am already dosing vodka that was a bad idea. With 1-2 drops a day I still see some bacterial growth on my overflow. Glad I did my research and asked questions!

the one thing that got me was the amino acid I got from brightwell readys

"moisture (max) 99.00% Crude Protein (min) 1.00%
should I feel ripped off by this product or is that pretty normal mixing ratio?

I have no idea where Ryan keeps getting his prices on our product from.

We have carried brightwell  microbacter 7 in the   17 oz for about 2 months now and it has always been 15.99 the reef biofuel 17oz is also 15.99

it was on sale last week for 12.99 and will be on sale again in the near future

How about from the stickers on your shelf where all the Brightwell stuff is?

It certainly could have been mislabeled or someone moved something. I have worked in retail long enough to know that product gets moved around quite a bit.

I just remember seeing a sticker and thinking "3x what I can get it for online? I don't think so"

Again, could have been a mislabeling issue or me reading the wrong sticker
