So about a month ago I changed the lights in my refugium. I added an LED Flood light from HD that was on a different post. It is an 18Watt daylight light. I also added a 65 Watt Compact flourscent light that is in a fixture that normally goes outdoors to light an entrance or parking light. I've never had good growth in my refugium with my chaeto and it never floated, it was always sitting on the sand bed.

I still didn't get very good growth with the new lights and then by chance I noticed while I was messing with stuff that the glass on the 65W CF said UV filter on it. So I took out the glass and now there is better growth, the chaeto looks more light green and floating. Now I'm getting a slime that is accumulating on the top of the water. It is hard to pull out except with a towel or something that soaks it up.

I've never seen this before in my refugium. I'm not running carbon, gfo, AA, or anything right now, except bio pellets. I'm not sure if the chaeto is dying and causing the slime, or if I should have left the UV filter on the light. let me know what you think?

I get that now also Brian.
My thoughts are:

Rotate your cheato, like turning a pancake.  And  siphon off the red slime.
I wouldn't worry about it.  I say, it's better to grow it in your refugium instead of your DT.
Is your tank looking better?

Does it have current going through the sump? I know that seems weird... But mine did the same thing. Then i added a powerhead that pushed the top of the water around and bam! Good as new. Slime went way.
This is more than a hobby; its a lifestyle.

I have a small powerhead on one side where my dosing pumps are but it is not directed at the chaeto. I will have to rearrange things and get some flow into the chaeto.

My tank is doing better, the ich is gone for now. I only have two fish left after the outbreak. I do have alot of small purple algae. It looks like short green hair algae only purple. I don't think it is cyano as it will not brush off, and it will not scrub off. I can pull some of the longer stuff off with my fingers but I can't get most of it off. anyway it is slowly getting better. thanks for asking.
