Topic: Need Aquascaping help Posted: July 11 2012 at 10:41am |
I live in Tooele and am having a hard time with my aquascaping it just doesn't look the way I would like it to. Is there anyone that has some experience that could come look at what I have and maybe give me a hand? I would be willing to compensate you for your gas and maybe even throw in some extra dough.
I am really liking this set up

What size is your tank? What kind of corals do you want to keep?
Scott Fellman had a great speech at last years Reeffest about aquascaping.
Some of the points he had was the rule of thirds (look that up).
No rock walls
Using more negative space
Making sure nothing is touching a wall.
We did our aquascape like 10 times. We kind of lucked into it. I had an idea and we just kept evolving it. We wanted a lot of negative space and sand space for corals. We put ours on a table and had cardboard under it outlining the size of the tank. That helped a ton (instead of doing it in the tank).
Check out the link in my sig, ours was more negative spacing. We have gotten some nice compliments on it from the people who have seen it.

AquaScaping is a pain in the butt when you are first starting. First you like it.. then you don't.. I can not remeber how many times that I had changed my aquascape the first couple months I had my first tank setup. It really depends on what you like the look of and what direction you possibly want to go with the tank later. Caves are always a good thing. Places for the fish to hide/sleep or cleaning stations for a cleaning shrimp. It takes time. I googled lots of ppictures to get various ideas on what would work for me and what I liked. Also build threads here are a great place to look at aquascape.

I am wanting to do a reef tank mainly with a few fish. Maybe a couple clowns and some Gobies of sorts and a flame angel. I think I have to many big pices in my tank right now as I have 30 lbs of LR with just 4 pieces.

I know this sounds weird, but I'm 100% convinced my fish are happier with an open look with lots of tunnels and caves...

Hey it sounds like I did the same thing you did. I bought a Biocube29 and not knowing anything about aquascaping I purchased rock that was really too large for my tank. You can bust up the rock into smaller pieces though. I wish I had looked at more pictures before I bought my liverock. I really like some of the "platforms" I see in some of the rock. I'm pretty happy with how my aquascape turned out now, but it is pretty crowded now that I have added softies. But, as it turns out the 3 fish I have are not known to be big swimmers and they seem to be really happy with all of the caves and stuff that they can swim thru. Before I upgrade to a much larger tank I'm hoping to be able to view some of the larger tanks owned by some of the members here to get some ideas about what I want.

Yeah I might consider breaking some of my rock up. If iwas to take it out and break it I assume I would have to cycle the tank again because some of the stuff on it would die or would it be ok.

Not sure. My rock was cured when I bought it and taking out a piece at a time breaking up didn't change any of the levels in my tank. I only broke up 2 of the large pieces. I guess you could remove some water from your tank and keep your rock in the water while you break it? I used a large screw driver, a wedge and a hammer LOL Someone else here may have better advice as I'm really new to this hobby. I don't really know what I was thinking when I selected the really large rock pieces for such a small tank when I bought the rock! Live and learn I guess ...

Well ended up picking up some new cured LR from th LFS and got it added to the tank. I have been watching my parameters a couple times a day and have not shown a change in anyhting. I think that my new setup is a little more pleasing to the eye and for the fish.

FYI: Its never a good idea to break up large pieces of rock. Releases all sorts of nasty in the tank.

I wouldn't ever break it up while in the tank nor did I. I did break some up to use in my refugium that I added. None of the rock in my DT was broken up by me.

Thanks for your opinion. Makes me feel a little better about it. I still don't think it's exactly what I want, but I am sure it will get there.

It's one of those things where the wife is riding me pretty hard about the money I am spending which is true. I just keep saying it's the initial cost to get into it. Just seeing if I could actually get anything out of it.

haha about it just being the "initial cost". My "initial cost" is still growing and my tank is almost 8 weeks old! I don't think there is any stopping to spending money on this hobby! I already can hardly wait to get a much larger tank, but I'm trying to force myself to wait until year end! I keep readin the ads of people selling stuff and it is so tempting!
Your new landscape pic looks really nice!

I'd be interested in that flat piece of rock you took out, if you still
have it. I need an excuse to come to Tooele too :) Let me know, Dustin

Your welcome to it, but it's in three pieces now. I dropped it on the floor and it just split into three. You could probably glue it back together. If your interested in it still let me know.
