What? Please tell us more.

BTW that's enough for a while. I wouldn't add anything more, except snails for algae control, for a couple months.

Hey Alex,

Sounds great!  Can your dad borrow a digital cam from a friend for ya?  Or maybe you've got a friend with a camera phone?      I wanna see it!

And didn't one of your tanks have an algae problem? What happened to that? How's it doing?

Good to hear that you believe the algae is gone, but why did you get a glass top? That can cause serious problems. Let's talk about that.

May I also caution you on another point too. Phosphate remover only handles a symptom not the cause of the problem, just like tissue wipes a runny nose but does nothing to clear the sinuses or combat the virus which caused the runny nose.

Also Phosphate remover used too often or too long can actually lead to snail death. The dead snails then contribute nutrients which grows more algae.

The inputs and outputs of the tank need to be "balanced", a word you used so nicely. Be certain that you have eliminated or at least reduced the source of nutrients, the cause of the algae. Also take steps to have the algae eaten as it grows.

Hermit crabs eat less algae than snails. Think about it, their body weight is much much less than a snail. Their metabolism is higher though, so that makes up for some of the difference.
I'm a little surprised that after we suggested that you get more snails and not so many hermit crabs, you have added more hermits and it appears that you barely increased the number of snails.

I'm very stubborn too.

you see the thing is on the 5th i have 8 more snails commeing in so that should be good and i only useh the remover stuff for a week and then took it out while reducing the amount of food that is left in the tank and instead of a 12 hour light pierid i lowered it to 10 and i got the glass top so when i get my fire fish down the road he can not jump out since they are well known jumpers and other Questions or concerns?

and thank you all for your input and soory it took so long to gett back to you

Well, I'm becoming quite impressed with you. Sonds like you are doing things right. I hope that this MB has helped.

My concern with the glass top is that gas exchange can be severly affected. If the idea is to keep fish from jumping, I have found that the quality of the environment is what makes them jump or not jump. Good conditions, with plenty of life in the tank, seems to be just as much a deterrent as a tank cover. I can't remember ever having a fish jump out of my tanks and I've had plenty of open topped tanks...two of them right now, FWIW.

I know that on the 39g one that i have there is a plastic grid piece (kinda like a grafting chart for math homework) i presume its there to prevent fish hoppin and yet keep the air to water ratio high.  maybe something like that would work for you as well lex0219 :)

Careful of those emeralds... there's just so many out there that claim to be the "true algae controllers". IMO, stick with what you've got and spend the rest on your little sweet heart.
