I thought I would share a discovery I made about lasering aiptasia since it applies to anyone who tried to laser aiptasia...

Lasering the aiptasia, while killing one anemone, causes spores and new cells to be released which quickly spreads the aiptasia. So effectively you may kill one aiptasia but hundreds more could take it's place.

I cannot recommend lasering aiptasia anymore. It still works great on majanos, palys, zoas, shrooms, and almost anything else. So far only aiptasia spread.

WOW! We did it... but there are already tons in the tank... so I cant come to the same conclusion.

That is crazy! Good to know. Thank you.

I'm told that if you make sure that you begin your burn at the mouth and work your way out to the rest of the body that the Aiptasia don't have a chance to spore and that any spores that are released are killed by the laser as they exit. I have seen successful laser usage clear a heavy infestation of Aiptasia from a tank with no spreading or spores so I know it can be done.

Anne, can you run some tests in a test tank to test that theory?

I've not seen a re-occurrence of the aiptasia I've lasered. It could happen I guess but the same could be happening without the laser too.

Sure. I'll try it out ASAP.

Eric at Aquarium Creations sells the parts for them...it's illegal to sell the whole laser assembled in the US since it's over 1W

There's forums that sell 3watt lasers. I have one from eric and I'm not too impressed. Doesn't work like the true 3 watt lasers I've seen on other forums.

Tony, what do you mean it doesn't work like a true 3 watt laser on another forum? The one i carry is a True 3 watt .  I also Agree with what Krazie4Acans statement this is the method i suggest and use as well.

Ok, after doing some testing it seems that if you fry the aiptasia really well it will not spread. But in order to do this you have to be able to hit the aiptasia in the mouth for an extended amount of time (30 seconds or so). Unfortunately many aiptasia will be positioned so that they can just retract into the rock meaning that lasering is ineffective.

However, for other pests such as majano, shrooms, unwanted zoas/ palys, etc. the lasers are great!!

So for hard to reach Aiptasia maybe a combo treatment of laser and aiptasia X (or other calcium paste) to make sure they don't spread would be the best solution. The rest are fair game and let the cooking commence. lol

I really need to get me a laser now so that I can prune the garden. :) Thanks Anne for being willing to test out the theory!
