Hey guys I am looking at setting up a seahorse tank but I don't know much about them and what better place to ask than here. Ill be in UT tomorrow and im looking at picking up a tank at petco since they have their $1/Gal sale going on. First off what size tank is suitable ? 40g? and is there any special equipment I need? The only thing I know is that they need a tank with low flow but that's about where my knowledge ends lol. I don't plan on buying livestock until I have a pretty good understanding of how to care for them.

To anyone wondering I was looking at parting out my 120g a couple weeks ago but im finding it a lot harder to get out of this hobby lol. Ill keep eating ramen noodles for a little while longer.

Brian.

I haven't even gotten that far mainly looking for general guidelines to start with. Looking over at Liveaquaria it looks like some species are hardier than others so Id start with something hardy.

Sure they do.  They have a 37 gal tank available.  Just not cheap (1 per gallon).

Ill have to see tomorrow. I have been looking at different sites for seahorses. CCritters.com and liveaquaria seem to disagree on dwarf seahorses. Liveaquaria says they are some of the most difficult to keep and the other site says they are some of the easiest and hardiest. So which one is it?

if you have time to hatch brineshrimp daily, and raise copepods then Dwarfs are great!!! If you would rather get a seahorse that will more likely take frozen find some other species that has been bred in captivity.

I bought my dwarfs from CCritters , No complaint from him(I paid for Overnight shipping instead of the USPS option. Okay only complaint, He doesn't seem to answer his phone or return calls, but he shipped my package out the week it was suppose to and I received four extra horses to boot. The packaging is not "liveaquaria" standards but I've had Seahorseworld.com in the past ship them via USPS send dwarfs and they were even less so packaged. Oh and his Florida Recordias are huge!

I don't see this move toward keeping Seahorses as a such good thing. I don't know all the reasons why you are selling the 120, but with the Ich problem that came after buying a Powder Brown Tang and with your comment in the OP alluding to the cost of it all, please don't try Seahorses. They are difficult. They are also not cheap nor are they any easier than trying to keep that Tang. Smile Instead, please set up a nice tank with nice coral, hardy fish, pretty macroalgae and snails to keep it all clean. Please don't be offended by my comments. I have been around the block many times. I have seen thousands of people come and go from this hobby. I would like to have you stay in the hobby because you set up a decent yet manageable reef aquarium, rather than see you leave the hobby when the Seahorses die.

Just my 2 cents.
Aloha,
Mark Hug

In a post where someone asks for advice on seahorses, it's bizarre and out of place to say, "Instead, please set up a nice tank with nice coral, hardy fish, pretty macroalgae and snails to keep it all clean." He came for advice, not orders to do what Mark wants him to do.

I think you missed the last line of his first post that he was selling and decided it was harder to get out of this hobby as many of us have experienced:)

As for seahorses they can be very difficult , I have had erectus and loved having them but you do need to feed several times a day which makes going on any vacation longer than a day very difficult. I don't have the time to elaborate any further right this minute but will get back on later and try and give some helpful pointers

Mark no offense taken. I couldn't bring myself to part out my 120g after I couldn't get my asking price for it. Im doing my research and avoiding an impulse buy as I did with the Powder Brown. On a side note I have been able to successfully keep a copperband butterfly fat and healthy if that counts for anything. (I was always told they are very hard to keep). As for the seahorses I do not plan to purchase any livestock until school is out which is in 5 weeks or so and ill wait even longer if I don't feel ready. In the meantime I am looking to the experts so I don't go in blind. I've seen numerous setups on youtube which show simple successful seahorse setups (HOB filter, heater, and light). From the sound of things it seems like feeding is the biggest hassle but the tank bred horses on liveaquaria all feed on frozen Mysis which should make things slightly easier. Hopefully Im on the right track so far.

I picked up a tank, hob filter, and heater at petco today. Got home and noticed the tank had a crack in it so now I get to drive all the way back to UT tomorrow. Bummer.

Brian.

I'm sure you are doing the right research to make it work. I have about 10 types of pretty Macroalgae but I'm in Murray, further south than you were planning to come today.

You know what Jack, you are absolutely right. I'm always too long-winded and controlling. What if I said this instead? "I wouldn't do Seahorses. They are a short lifespan PITA."
