I've seen and heard of T3's, T5's, and T12 (I think there was a twelve). What do they mean and are there more?

There is also T8's and probably more. The sizes are for different thicknesses of the bulb. They may have slight differences in wattage outputs also. As for the exact sizes, I do not know off the top of my head.

T12 - 1.3 inch diameter
T8 - 1 inch
T5 - approx 3/4 inch but I have not actuqally measured them.
T3 - don't know if I've seen 'um, but they are probably the 1/2 inch type used in those small portable emergency lamps.

When I used 2- 32 watt 3' T8 actinics on a cuttings tank driven with an old tar ballast made to be used for 40W 4' T12's the light came out pretty bright and grew stony's like crazy. I had it going for almost a year and didn't notice any loss of intensity, probably because the tubes were being overdriven. So I don't know how long the tubes would have lasted.

FYI, under-powering flourescent bulbs causes more harm than over-powering them.

I think T5 are 5/8".

The number after the T is 1/8ths of an inch.  So T5 are 5/8", T8 are 8/8" (or 1 inch) and T12 are 12/8" (or 1.5 inch).

That scheme has good intentions, but measure them and you will see the true diameter. I just measured a T12. It's 1-3/8 inch(approx 1.3"). I don't have the others handy to measure.

How can underpowering harm less than overpowering? That makes no sense to me. Overpowering makes them brighter and burns them out sooner. Underpowering, to a point, makes them dimmer and last (just a little?) longer. Of course too little power and they just glow at the ends and don't turn on.

Sorry guys

According to the engineers at Fullham Inc. (makers of workhorse ballasts) and the guys at commercial lighting, underpowering flourescent lamps will make them burn out sooner. I'm not a lighting expert, I just listened to the guys that are.

Mark,  it's not my scale... it's just how it was explained to me by a "lighting guy".  Maybe it's a standard that no one follows .
