Topic: Gorgonia Posted: January 25 2006 at 11:46am |
I have been looking lately at some gorgonia (are they considered corals??, regardless they are nice to look at) and was wondering what peoples experiences have been. The photosynthetic variety would be nice to have simply because i dont feed my tank all that often. Do they play well with corals and other tank inhabitants even in a smaller tank, say ~20 gal? Does anyone have one that they are willing to frag? I have seen some in local shops and a few dont look that healthy to me, or maybe i dont know what I am talking about....

I have three different gorgonias. They seem pretty easy to keep but I did have one wild collected one that didn't do well. They do fine with other corals. I could probably get a frag of the largest one for you.

Most of the photosynetic ones aren't that difficult to keep. Similar water quality and light requirements as most photosynthetic corals.
Most of the non-photosynthetic ones are very difficult to keep, unless you feed your tank often and then they still aren't easy. The bright red and bright yellow deepwater varieties almost always die.
I had a photosynthetic gorgonian that was overgrown by green star polyps. Maybe that's not a fair battle though becasue green star polyps can overgrow most anything.

Most of what I have seen, both locally and on the web, are the non-photosynthetic variety. Dont know if I have ever seen the photosynthetic ones at the LFS, usually just the red and yellow ones... and have been apprehensive about getting those. I like the fuzzy photosynthetic ones that I have seen pictures of on the web.
Susan, which types do you have?

Non-photosynthetic gorgs. are tough, and they happen to be the prettiest. I have tried way too many times to keep these beauties and usually with the same result, the very slow wasting away at the bottom of my tank. Usually if the polyps are a brilliant color they are non-photosynthetic. The off white or brown polyp variety are usually you photosynthetic kind.

All of mine are photosynthetic. Two fuzzy ones and a purple one. The one I can frag is this one:

There are some fantastic flat purple photosynthetic Gorgonia that do very well with enough light. They come from Florida and are way cheap because they grow in shallow areas where they are easy to collect. The fact that they are so common might be why we rarely see them. MSM has some that need a good home. Below is a pic of that purple Gorgonia in my tank. I am willing to frag it for you. Actually there are two other Florida Gorgonia behind the purple one that I am also able to frag.

Mark, where did you get that flat purple one in the foreground? I saw that stuff all over when we lived in Florida but of course we couldn't collect it legally. I'd like a large colony for sentimentality's sake. Anyone sell big healthy kinds like that? Usually you see seriously hurting gorgonians at the LFS.

I got it from MSM. They have many more. If you want a frag, let me know, and come see all my frags for sale. I live near MSM!
Actually, Gorgania is not listed as a restricted coral, so you can collect all you want from Florida waters!
