Topic: RTN & Superglue?? Posted: July 22 2004 at 4:58pm |
Has anyone tried using superglue to stop RTN?? I read about it somewhere and about a week ago noticed this coral starting to RTN. I superglued the infected area and it seems to be doing ok but I have no idea what the long term effects will be... any input is appreciated.

Cool. That's good to know. And I doubt there would be any long term effects caused by the super glue.

I'm interested to see what happens... wondering is the tissue will grow around the glue or if it will always be there?? I'll post updates over the next few month.

That's fantastic Travis. SPS immediatly start to grow over superglue so this is cool. How did you apply the superglue? Was it non-gel type so it could flow over the infected area?

I used a gel type superglue but I do think a non-gel superglue would be better. This coral is on one of the top rocks so it is easily removed. So I lifted it out of the water and covered the area really well... a little to well because the infected area was smaller but I wanted to make sure I covered enough area to hopefully stop it from spreading. We'll see...

Rapid Tissue Necrosis- basically within a couple of hours your coral sloughs off all of its tissue, and dies. Usually starts at the bottom of the coral, and you see the black dying area, slowly work its way up.
Summed up- bad thing to have happen.

OH! Is that what that is. I had one coral that did that when I had a heater issue and the tank was 10 degrees too high. As soon as I saw it, I ripped off the black part (which had covered 80% of it) now that rest is regrowing.

Resurrecting for curiosity.
Is this a known fix now? Will
cutting off the black part and super gluing the edge stop RTN? Have there been others that have tried this
and if so, what were the results?

I have used superglue to stop RTN a few times with great success. I have been able to save about 3 different SPS by fragging and using glue to cover the infected area. I have never lost a colony by doing this. Definately worth a try.
