Topic: Dead tank Posted: April 09 2012 at 1:25pm |

It is and it is not an emergency ;) The tank in our office (38g IM with Led sky light)suffered a mass casualty this morning. It was fine when checked last night but Kaboomed this morning. Every fish, crab and shrimp is dead. Snails are still with us and a few bristle works are cruzin the sand. Ive already done a 90% water change and cleaned the filter sponges. Added a bunch of carbon and Chemi Pure. (hence why it isnt an emergency) Question is as follows. When we were draining the tank the water was bright yellow. What the heck makes the water bright yellow? Yes it was a little milky and it smells like death.
The corals are more stressed from the temp change with the water change than they were when we got in this morning.
Dead live stock yellow tang flasher wrasse 2 spot goby Geometric pygmy hawk fish 2 fire fish dozen or so crabs. 4 peppermint shrimp 2 blue neon gobies
Again the corals are looking ok and the snails are looking good at this point.
There is one more inhabitant of this tank. Its my guess that it is his fault. Ill know more if I can find its body.
Temp was not an issue nor was power.

Question is???? What makes the water Bright Yellow???????? Is this something I need to be watching for? Is this possibly an outside issue with chemi pure or ????????? (no one had access to this tank all weekend but me)
And yes Bob, it is one of the above.

My foreman thought maybe Mark had been around and tried to help the cycle process;)< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0">

Hey Dion, Did you have flatworms in the tank that you know of? Or possibly use Flatworm Exit recently ? I have heard that a LARGE population of dying flatworms can turn water yellow when they are releasing their toxins as they die. HTH

Nope. No flatworms. No medication. If Mark didn't mark it then it has to be the tiger tail cuke. I just can't find anything describing yellow water.

Almost. Kinda like a neon yellow. Very bright. I have these cuc's in all my tanks and have never had an issue. I don't know if the hawk fish pissed it off or if it just decided to commit suicide. The funny thing is I pulled the clowns out on Friday because they are mean. That will make the third disaster they have survived ;(< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0">

last week I had pulled some bristle worms out of my tank. I accidentally cut one in half when I pulled it out of my tank. I put both parts in a cup that had some tank water in it. from my hand. it turned the cup water neon yellow. I wonder if it could be that..

That's a good thought. I'm pretty sure Dion would have had lot's of Bristleworms, bu they often survive when other things die. They are great scavangers, part of the cleanup crew. I was thinking the color would be a combination of colors from the many things that died in the tank.

Your tank looked good, Dion. I'm sorry to hear that it crashed.
I've had green water in a tank that was cycling. Yellow is a new one.

Ouch. Continuous use of Chemi-pure is not good. Do you think it was it the cause of the yellow or the cause of death which resulted in yellow?
