I have just a few items left in my 55g to transition to my new 180.

I have an acan colony that has been growing on a piece of live rock for about 3 years.  Not sure how to take it off without killing it.  The rock has aiptasia on it and is too big to put in the new tank (we don't want to move it).  Any advice on removing it safely?

We have a 6 inch clam that rests on a sand bed but is next to a huge piece of live rock.  A while ago my wife tried to move it but it wouldn't budge (she was gentle).  Not sure how to coax it from the rock its on saftely.  I can't even seem to see where it is connected.  I thought of digging my hands under the sand and seeing what I could feel and slowly pulling up.  I hear you can cut the foot a sliver but don't feel comfortable doing that.

Thanks
-Jon

I'm not sure but you might have to try to cut/break the rock the acan is on because I don't think you will be able to remove it from the rock. I don't know about clams..the only one I ever tried to keep died in like a day.

Jon -

You are better off locating the clams 'foot' (byssal gland thread) and using a sharp razor blade to cut it as far away from the clam body as possible. If you just pull on the clam it may tear and possibly injure the clam.

As for the acans, if they have attached to the rock I don't know how you could remove them. You might try a hammer and chisel a few inches away from the coral to try and break the rock up to a smaller size so that it would fit better in the new tank...

I agree with Bob.
If it's in the sand, the clams foot may be attached to the bottom glass? If it's connected to a rock that isn't wanted use a hammer and chisel or screwdriver.
I've chiseled many rocks apart to save the portion that I wanted. Be prepared that the rock will break where you didn't want it to. Now you have acan frags. Smile
