Topic: Nano Reef. >.> Posted: January 24 2013 at 7:57pm |
Hello,
my name is Ron, I am looking at setting up a nano reef so that I can
enjoy this hobby again. I have had an account here before, but I can't
remember my username so yeah.
I'm looking at setting up a nano
reef from 10-29 gallons and maybe doing T5 or LED lighting. I would like
to know what is out their now based off the technology that is out
today. I'm gonna be doing some research, but if you wanna give some
advice please do so.
I'm looking at a nano tank because I'm
Joining the Air force to start my career in Avionics so I will be moving
every so often and I would like to have something that wont be to hard
to tare down and set back up, but something that will still look nice. |

Welcome back! I've currently got a 12 gallon nano that I set up about 5 months ago. I went with LED's and I love them. I would highly recommend going LED's. Im also in Bountiful and you're more than welcome to come over anytime and see my set up.

I have a 16 gallon Innovative Marine tank that I have been running since summer, been a pretty good tank lighting is a bit weak with the LED's it comes with but for $350 for the whole setup its not too bad, will do Zoa's/softies and most LPS that I have encountered..don't think I would try chalices in it..but may work.

I started with a 12 gallon eclipes. Loved it but wanted a little larger so went with a 29 gallon and added a sump. I'm also in Bountiful so when it comes time to seed the tank let me know and I can give you some live sand, rock, and macro.

Thanks Everyone, I will have to set a planned time to go look at both of your guys's set ups. $350 isn't to bad so I will let you know. I've been thinking alot about the LED lighting, and I found a setup on Ebay(yes ebay) that has a Dimmable ability, and it was only $140 ish.

I have a 12 gallon JBJ that I put my own LED setup over. I'm kind of a electronics nut, so I liked putting it together - and I wanted to splurge on good LEDs so I went with www.stevesleds.com and I've been very happy with it.

Key is to making sure that the LED's are quality, Not sure still what Steve's led's branding is seems generic Chinese when I was doing my build he may have better now but I did a huge amount of research on the matter when I built my setup from scratch. I did end up going with rapidLed all Cree led's. Got my heatsinks from Heatsinkusa. I am an electronic engineer and work in Semiconductor industry, so I hate putting them together but know an awful lot about them and potential issues you may encounter. I will eventually do a self made fixture for my nano but I just got done with a 192 Led build for my 180 display. So a little burnt on it right now. But would be happy to help you in any way I can. Here is a link to my build thread.. http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=58058&title=led-build-for-180

Steve's LEDs sells both the cheapo and the Philips Luxeon stars. I have the latter. I also have a degree in EE, though I do software now. I built my setup myself as well. I don't think there is one end-all solution. Crees are solid LEDs, I just went with Steve's because their tech support answered a lot of my questions and I felt that their service deserved my business. I wouldn't have begun a conversation with them if I didn't have confidence in their products, either, so, take that for what it's worth. One last thought from data sheets: Cree R5 XP-G R5 5W Cool white LED - 260 - 348 lumens at 700mA to 1A, respectively. Philips Luxeon ES - 351 lumens at 1A. I'm driving my LEDs at 800mA. I don't know if the relationship between current and lumen output is linear in that range, but I think it's safe to guess that the two LEDs are quite similar and comparable for power consumption and lumen output when driving them in that range. Granted, the Cree's can be driven up to 1.5A, but I find that driving the Philips LEDs at 800mA to be sufficient for anemones and SPS, and uses less power. As the Philips Luxeon ES stars are a tad cheaper over at www.stevesleds.com, and I really liked Steve's customer support, I figured I'd go with them. I am extremely happy with my purchase. My current tank is in my office, and when I'm ready to do the home tank I know exactly where I'll be going to set up the lighting system.
