Topic: HQI Bulb? Posted: June 07 2005 at 9:25am |
Anyone know of a good place to buy a 250 watt double ended HQI bulb?
I've been using the 20K because I like the color. Any thoughts on what type of bulb I should get? 10K? 14K? 20K?

Where do you find them? How is the light? White or blue?

Burton Marine here on the board... just take a look at Hellolights.com, then pm him and get what you chose at a significant discount. I get all of my lighting through him.

I also like the
Phoenix 14k's ... I get them from reefgeek.com. They are a bit on the blue side.

If you are sticking w/ a 20K ... I like the BLV (ushio) bulbs. They have a very nice color, but low PAR.

Low PAR = Less growth.. So, in most cases no. Most 20K bulbs are pretty
low PAR. 20K = Less growth and better color IMO. The 14K is a nice
balance. I have a 14K Phoenix over my 60 (with T5s) and 20K -- 14K --
20K over my 120 (4x2x2)

I'm debating this right now myself. I'm either going with the Phoenix 14 K or will go with 10 K (any brand, I don't care) and VHO/T-5 actinics. I always debate lighting options, I never know what I really want.

Hey Corey, How much are the 14K Phoenix bulbs? Sorry, my work restricts where I can go on the internet.

I don't have a "better" idea. Just lots of other ideas that keep confusing my mind.

You'll get much better growth and par from an XM 10k with an actinic suppliment, but for color and less par the Phoenix is the way to go.

If you decide on 10K, give the EVC bulbs a look. They put out more PAR than the XM bulbs, but are cheaper.
lighting.reefs.org
That is THE BEST site for comparing halide bulbs.
For growth - 10k/actinic combo.
For color - 14k phoenix bulbs
Good luck!

Shane has tried both, and gives good advice. His old 14K's are over my tank now and it looks great.
