I have attempted to do it several times for my other hobby (reptiles) and the problem is a clean cut. If you were considering it you would want a "good" glass shop to do the cuts for you. If they will cut it and sand the edges, you are good to go IMO. Cost wise, many shops will have used non-tempered plate glass that they can cut up. You will need to call around and check on the prices.
