This is a great site!! it sure is nice to get advice from locals.

Anyway I bought a 75g tank and its in dire need of sand.  I have read on the internet about sand called Southdown.  Its aragonite based and is really popular back east.  Plus if you can find it, its dirt cheap vs buying sand from LFS.  From what I have read its playsand thats mined out of Florida and people use it all the time.

What is your opinion and if its good where can you get aragonite sand in Utah and if its not good let me know so I dont buy it.  Thanks!!

Welcome to the group.  Unfortunately Southdown sand is not available out west. I believe a number of us have tried to obtain it without success.  There is another local source available though. We live on a ancient ocean bed. So there is sand that has worked for many of us.  But it is not without its doubters. So feel free to do a search and good luck on your decision.

do a search for Utah oolitic sand on this site. I'm using alot of it but some are opposed to it. Just make sure you clean it well. Basically, just know there are pro's and con's.

Utah Oolitic Sand is dusty but nothing that rinsing can't cure! There are probably 100 people now using it with no problem. Unfortunately for beginners, the LFS don't know about this amazing local resource and when they do, why would they encourage you to use it and keep your $$ in your pocket?
Anyone new to the hobby is going to question it but what more can I say. I've been around a long time. It works as well as the $1/lb. stuff.
I acquired about 30 gallons of it, waiting to be given free to someone that doesn't want to make the trip out west to collect it.

Recipe: 1-2 inches Utah Oolitic Sand on the bottom of the tank with 1/2-1 inch CaribSea Special Grade Reef Sand on top. Add Utah Aragonite Rock with some LR and serve at about 75-80 degrees F.

Mark, I am getting a 125 next weekend and would LOVE some U.O. sand to add for the DSB. It should compliment  the Utah rock pretty well I would think! Let me know if you have enough or if not, remind me where the "pure stash" is?

Also, would a nice cream sauce go well with it?

Mark,

I'd like to get some sand and some Utah rock for my sump/refugium.  Do you still have some left?  Where can I get the rock and/or sand?  I do not need much.  I am only going to stock two ten gal. tanks and add about 10 lbs of rock to my main tank.

Mark, I'd also like some if you have it. I just picked up an 18 Gallon tank that I plan to do a "Utah-Rock-and-Sand" nano reef in. Let me know if you have anything left.

The leftover sand is all gone, sorry.

We need to do a trip soon before it gets too wet and muddy out there. Whooops, it's already wet and muddy!
Oh well, I might be able to guide a trip this week. Anyone?

Maybe the ground will be a little drier by Saturday. Just this morning I watched Utah Power get two vehicles stuck in the mud in the vacant lot next door.

Today appears, from the look of the weather reports and the sky this morning (red from horizon to horizon!), to be the last good day to collect sand and especially rock.
I'm willing to tear myself away and go collect ASAP. If you are interested or want me to get some for you, call me right now, do not PM.
