I have a Hamilton Beach 250 watt MH. I am wondering if I can put a 175 watt bulb in and run without any problems. I know you can't add a bulb higher than the ballast rating, but what about lower?

Thanks!

Nope... it will try to push it to drive like a 250.

Sounds like I should sell this one and get me two 175s then. Anyone interested?  Or for a trade?

just run a 250 on one side of the tank and a 175 on the other side.  it won't be to noticable.  but if you want a 175 for a 250 I'd be happy to cooperate.

Why do you want to run a 175 watt instead of a 250 if you already have the 250 setup?  Is it just more light than you need want?  The price difference is very small between most 175 and 250 bulbs.

I'll trade frags for the bulb if it's a good color.

Thanks Mike, nice to be here. I don't need 2 250 watt lights - I would prefer two 175 watts.  For what I am doing, 500 watts is just overkill!

Thanks :)
