 Topic: Maxi Jet Modification

I am not sure if many of you have done one of those Maxijet 1200 mods to a stream style pump or not.
I did one, I bought the brand new Maxijet 1200, and the complete kit from www.mjmods.com and I am telling you it was the best money I ever spent.
My ORP reading was hovering around 360 for weeks. Within 24 hours of putting the working MJ MOD Stream pump into my system, my ORP reading was 410 , and over 400 for the first time in month.
With just this one MJ1200 mod, I could see dead spots in my tank come alive, looking like little volcanoes around the tank spewing ash into the air..
Believe me, I had always thought I had real good flow, 2200 GPH combined flow in main display, 110 gallon... But adding this stream pump made me realize the error of my ways. FLOW is important, but TYPE of flow is even more important.. and these STREAM pump modifications put out some awesome flow in the tank... I am getting almost total water movement now in every square inch of tank The surface agitation is incredible, Took the fish a day to get into the new flow patterns in the tank, and they are looking real happy now. Nothing seems to settle, everything remains in the water column until it is skimmed down the overflow eventually. My skimmer production doubled from adding this pump..
IF you have not tried one.... believe me I think you should give it a go, and they don't look bad in the display really.
You won't often see me getting excited about something, but this modification kit is really good. ANYONE can do it, no special tools required at all... SUPERGLUE, and a measuring device to measure lengths in inches, a sharp knife, and follow some very easy instructions.

 I have 8,000 gph in my 150.

Well yes Adam, but I just have fish and coral in mine..... you are still surfing in yours a couple times a week aren't you :)

Dave, when you buy the kit from MJMods, is it really that easy? If so, I think I'm gonna purchase some MJ's and some Modkits soon.

I was able to mod out Rio's Maxi's just about any power head. I the results were amazing! I searched a few hobby shops and picked up the props and carbon rods real cheap. The PVC coupler from HD. I highly recommend it. I went from dead spots using 4 power heads down to 2. They are so strong that they tend to pull a vortex from the surface water. I had to modify the PVC openings to prevent the suction. Reef Central has a long tread on the build.

Yes the kits are really that easy... and the parts are all there. The vortex from the surface that Bob mentions is even covered. A piece of acrylic that slides into the pump body where the pump mount would slide in prevents that. The kit is very good. All the parts fit perfect, well balanced, no noise.. It really was the best money I ever spent..

I run 2 maxi jet 1000 mods in my 55 with a 900gph(roughly 700-750 true w/ head loss) return to boot... now, that's alotta water.

No, no one sells it. You have 2 choices at this point, 1. make your own, 2. buy the parts to make it from mjmods.com

You can get carbon rods and props at most hobby shops in town. PVC at the Home Depot.

I couldn't find the schedule 80 PVC at Home Depot or Lowe's. All they had was schedule 40 and the inner diameter is a little too big. I threw an extra o-ring on the maxijet and the sc 40 stuff worked though.
