i ordered some glass that was the wrong size ... doh! So, i decided to 'do the right thing' and just build a little nano out of it

the size of the tank will be 14H x 12W x 12D ... i'll add a little refuguim on to the back of it which will prob extend the back out by as much as 8".

does anyone know of any small nano lights that are cool (12" - 18")? just out of curiosity ... would a 150 MH pendant be super overkill and have really high evaporation?

I'd go with a 70 watt DIY metal halide pendant or a 150 DE pendant.

The evaporation shouldn't be too bad if it is a pendant and the top is closed or no fan blowing over the tank's surface...

sounds cool... a little MH pendant sounds pretty nice looking ... do you have any info or links on a DIY 70w MH pendant?

i also saw a little 18" 96 PC retro that looked like it would work. http://www.hellolights.com/185cfquadret.html

As far as lighting is concerned. What are you planning to keep? That will dictate how much light you need.

If you are not going to do any sps I would stick with a power compact. I run a 55w 50/50 on my 10 gallon and I have been sucessful with lps softies and Anemones. I was able to keep montipori alive but it was not enough for any growth. If you are going to do sps frags for sure go with a Mh pendant.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&thre adid=317958

There is a little info there since Ice Cap started making a 70 watt ballast that you can later upgrade to run a 150 watt bulb...

There are lots of people who have done a 70 watt pendant here:

Jared, I am very interested to see your tank with the 175Mh . I may very well do this when I upgrade the lights on my 125.
Is that 20k the only bulb you are running?

Here are two really bad pictures:

That's all I could grab before my camera's battery died, if you're still interested I can take some better pictures once it's charged.  The pictures were taken with the lights off in the room and I didn't think the camera would die before I could take some with he lights on.

Just for info Aquatic Ecosystems has a 150w DE MH pendant for sale for $150.00 complete with bulb. Makes me want to set up a nano tank.

Coryk, Is the auto-topoff chamber going to be saltwater? If so, and the area would be dark, I'd engineer a little water flow and make it a Benthic Zone (Sponge) Refugia! Then your main tank would rock.

Also, if those two holes are at different heights, the flow in and out of the main tank could be by gravity. That flow would be sufficient for both refugia. Water could run from the main through a lower hole to the topoff/Benthic Refugium (eliminate the "return" section). A small pump with short tube would fill the RDP Refugium and then it would spill down again into the main aquarium. It would look like this:

RDP REFUGIUM
             Â Â MAIN AQUARIUM
BENTHIC REFUGIUM with a pump pushing water back up and through/over the wall into the RDP

I'd still place another small pump in the main tank for surface agitation. The heater would be best in the RDP Refugium, IMO, making the warmest water in the tide pool RDP leading to the main tank. Coolest water in the Benthic Zone. This setup would be completely flood-proof and always restart after a power outage.

If this is interesting to you, check out the WMAS Library book by Steve Tyree, Environmental Gradient, Sponges and Sea Squirts as Filtration.
