I don't think you will find too many people who don't run their skimmers 24 / 7...
My skimmer is also on 24/7. Most people think you can not have too much skimming. In some situations it might be better to not run it all the time. I have read of people not wanting too much skimming. I'm not sure if they want some "stuff" left in the water or if they feel thier skimming needs are less then what the skimmer can handle. I read about one guy who said his skimmer stopped making skimmate when he added a refugium with a DSB and 100 mangroves under high light. So I would say it depends on the system and what you are going for.
definetly not a dumb question! i do mine 24/7 but i have a very high bioload. I have heard of people only doing like 12 hours a day. I prefer to skim 24/7
I also have a very high bioload and I do 0. So I think you are safe any way you want to run it. Just watch your livestock and make sure they look good. If you start tweaking things and they react negatively, go back to what was working before.
If you feed your corals, I would try and find a time when your skimmer needs to be cleaned in the evening and put the coral food in while your skimmer is off. Otherwise you'll disrupt the forming of bubbles and set back the skimming somewhat. I've noticed mine will pull out cyclopeeze right out, but then again I usually don't bother shutting it off. I run mine 24/7 too.
