I want to build my own stand to replace the one I have.

I can build the stand for the aquarium I have now using the guidelines on the GARF site (or elsewhere).

Please give me some advice.  Most people get larger aquariums later so what do you think of a stand that is the same length as my current aqurium, but deeper so I can put a larger aquarium on it some day?  The extra space would be behind the tank where I wouldn't see it for now.

The other advantage this gives me is that I can get a bigger sump under the stand.

I'm concerned about the strength and would appreciate your input.  A stand that is the exact size of the tank puts the weight of the tank directly over the structure of the stand (legs, cross pieces, etc.).

If you are worried about the weight add corssbeams directly under the tank and/or even legs that could be removed when you go to a large tank.  I would think that some good crossbeams would be enough though.  Try 2x4's with the 4" side vertical.

A friend of mine has a 90 gallon tank, but built her stand and extra 4 feet long so she could put a 180 or 210 on it someday if she decided to.

This seems like a good idea if you think one day you may expand.

I had to finish the cabinet when I bought Ryan's tank. I ended up going with one full peice 48 long that I velcroed on. The sides are nailed and stable but I wanted to be sure I had ample room to get under it for the ref/sump. I now peal the front off work on it and put it back in place. The corners are also peal off so when its in place it has a very nice finished look.. Thats my idea... Good luck with your project.

what size of tank to you have/want?  2*4's worked great for me or for a larger you could go with 2*6's.  they'll hold any fishtanks weight.
