I have an external Velocity T4 pump for tank circulation and an Iwaki 40 that powers my skimmer. I also have a Mak 4 that I keep as a spare. The Velocity is unbelievably quiet. Absolutely no sound. The Iwaki (and the Mak 4) is a bit noisy. The majority of the pump noise is caused by the motor cooling fan. I was doing a little modifying of my skimmer and had the pump out from under the tank... I thought, what the heck, I'll remove the motor fan from the pump making it quieter. But rather then risk the Iwaki, I removed the fan from the Mak. Here's some before and after pics.

Yes, I do know this is kind of a stupid thing to do
. I've got a quieter (separate external) fan blowing on the motor to help keep it cool. The pump is quieter then before, not as quiet as the Velocity, but better. It still has a bit of a vibration that I can hopefully kill with a little foam.
Have any of you done this before? How did it turn out? I will update this thread if the motor fails
or if six months down the road everything is ok
.
