Topic: Anemone help maybe Posted: December 25 2008 at 11:53pm |
I woke up this morning to find my way cool condy looking funny and I do not know what to do about it. Half of its tentacles are shrivled and a darker grey color and his mouth looks to be torn. I do not know if it was fighting with a fish or something or if there is some disease it could have? Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated. I was going to wait it out but thought I might throw it up on here to see if this has happened to anyone.

If you have a pic people will be able to tell you what's up.

I am trying to get one but it is shriveled up and covering the mouth. I will get one ASAP as soon as I can get a good one.

With Condis my opinion is it is okay unless the mouth is way open, i have had a few and they tend to shrink alot more then my BTA and Ritteri when they are doing their business. Check the water if its okay then i would not worry to much, in fact on sunday my condi decided he didnt like his place in the tank and started moving around, got sucked into a filter, was there as much as 3 hours before i got to him, his foot was torn apart and thought he would be a total loss, but kept him in the tank and glad i did because he has healed up quite nicely.

My condi would look like crap every couple weeks.
It would shrink down either parts or all together, looking like a deflated helium balloon. All shriveled up and really kinda gross and creepy.
I would think it was dead or dying, but in a day or two it would be just fine again.
It kinda looked like this, but dark pink/purple

They will often shrink up to despell all thier water and junk that's in them mine does this about 4-5 times a week. A Pro and Con with them is they move to where they like which means they move to where they feel the most comfortable in the tank. So for the shrivle it's ok, they are supposed to do that. As for a tear I don't know how that happened or what to do about it. For now just keep a close eye I guess, until you get a pic and someone knows what you can do to help it.

It is looking better today. I know what tey look like when it expells waste and such i have had it for a while. What I am thinking is maybe my coral banded got in a fight with it or something? That is the only reason I can think of why its mouth was ripped. Or maybe a fish escaped from it I don't know. But it is doing better today.

It's actually not normal, nor healthy for any kind of anemone to shrink 4-5 times per week and to move around the tank. In good conditions the anemone should find a place and stay there for at least 6 months. In a healthy tank the anemone should not shrink often or at all. If you would like, we can discuss how to make the tank a more anemone friendly environment. And btw, all pics are useful, no matter what is showing or not showing. Here is a pic of our Condy, in the same place since setup and growing larger month by month:

If a anemone is inflating and deflating that much there might be a problem. But its not all that uncommon for one to do it. When its doing it its exspelling waste and doing a internal water change. On how often they do it also depends on how often they eat and other facters.

In my very first tank, a 55 in 1993, I had a Condy that expanded and retracted every day. It grew smaller week by week until it disappeared, or at least I thought so until I moved and transferred everything to a new 75 gal with a RDP Refugium. Then over the next year, the thing grew until it was about 18 inches from tip to tip. Oh and btw, I never fed it.
