I was doing what I do best last night, starring at my tank... and saw one of my crabs grabing some algea from under the rock. I have an emerald crab (it like tripled in size with the last molt!) and a strawberry crab (almost never see him, but he has been coming out a bit more at night.) I didn't think much of these little crab legs until I saw my emerald else where in the tank looking particularly mean and green... This little crab at first just looked jet black with the body about the size of a dime, but as I watched it I noticed a lot of white on its underside, and big white spots on the arms of his claws. I took some pictures and will get them uploaded, but here is one online that I have found that resembles it.
It has the same hairy white stripped back legs and looks just like this except the elbows in the pincher arms have big white spots.
Anyway, everything I have found is calling it a Black Mithrax Crab, which makes sense because it looks just like the emerald crab, except for the coloration. Any other ideas?
Crazy thing is I have a small tank (30 gallons) and haven't added any live rock since September. How did this guy stay unnoticed so long with me always with my face stuck to the glass?
Now I have to figure out how to get him out. He is very quick. When I do get him out, anyone want him? I don't have a fuge or anything to put him in.
