I've noticed over the past week that when I turn my return pump off and the tank quiets down I hear a strange knocking coming from inside the tank (kind of sounds like a ghost story huh?). It's not constant, just a few knocks then nothing for a while and then again. 

Now I've had a mantis shrimp before and managed to get him out but I thought they made more of a clicking noise then anything. This is like something is knocking on a rock. 

Anyone have a clue what this could be?

Do you have a check valve on the system? If the checkvalve isat an angle you can hear knocking.

I have a tiny one that runs from the return pump hose to my Ca reactor. Not sure that would cause it though. Seems to small (1/4").

I've got to get a recording of this. It really is strange and I'm pretty certain it comes from the inside of the aquarium.

I bet it is the check valve. The sound could be amplified by the plumbing.
