So why is it that we have to buy "aquarium" pumps that are $200, $300,
$400 and up for returns, instead of using a pump from Home Depot that
costs $80?

I use a ViaAqua for my return. I bought it at one of our local fish stores for about $80.

i personally dont think a via aqua is going to pump 14' of head with 1500gph flow. i guess i should have clearified. i was referring to large pumps, like the reeflo dart, or hammerhead.

Ceramic shafts, corrosion resistance ect. Home depot pumps are not rated for contunious running and are used for fresh water. (their big pumps, sump pumps) I ran one for my pond and it only lasted a couple months.

Ahhhh, yes that is a big difference. For something like that I'd be looking into a hammerhead.

The Dart will not handle 14' of head but the Hammerhead will handle it nicely with 4200 gph drawing 360 watts.

OOOOO does my hammerhead pump. At almost 20' (up/diagonal/up) it is to much for the dual overflows. (All 4 drains) I have it throttled back and feed another tank to siphon off some of the flow.

thanks everyone.
dion i guess that is what i will do. since the frag tank will be right next to the sump, i will branch off and take care of it's return with the same pump. i probably will have about the right amount of flow by then, or close to...
now, just to save up for that hammerhead. i think i can get one on RC for around $250, maybe less.
