I know you can have not enough light but is it possible to have to much? I'm currently setting up my tank. I have looked at lighting options and with the lights I want it would be about 8 Watts per gallon. Is that way to much? The wattage would be 2 - 250W halides and 4 - 65W Power Compacts

Watts per gallon isn't a good way to measure lighting. How tall is the tank and what do you want to have in the tank?

Yeah I have heard its not a good way to measure just wondered if to much was possible. I want a mixed reef. That tank is 30x30x24. So its 24 inches tall. I want it to go from SPS down to softer coral.

Yes, too much is possible, although too much is usually an awful lot.

Every coral is different, but there is a point at which they get overloaded with light and shut down.  We had a speaker here a year or so ago that spoke about this, but I don't remember who.
