 Topic: Building from scratch.

Hello all! I am not really new to reefkeeping but am new to actually building one from scratch. I am kinda going for a complete DIY project, with the exception of a protein skimmer. I want to start off by building ~90 gal tank. But I am not sure to where I can buy sheet(s) of glass? Does anyone have any ideas of where I can pick some up? I am in the Ogden area but am willing to travel. I would like to have starphire glass if at all possible. Thanks for your help in advance.

Welcome to the board. Not sure where to get the glass, but get the silicone at Grainger, you want the momentive rtv, it comes in black and clear.

Your local glass shop should be able to order anything you need. Just be sure to have at least the bottom pane tempered after you have the holes cut for the overflow.

Look up kellys staind glass, they are on 1900 in Ogden, I have had them cut glass for me and they do a very good job and they flat polish the edges as well (if you ask). I heard from the owner they score there glass with a CNC machine so they are as square as possible. Also what fishoutawater said, use Momentive RTV 108 (black) or 103 (clear) for the silicone it is much stronger then anything you will buy from any LFS this is the silicone alot of top aquarium builders use. One last thing not a whole lot of people mention is you need to get small spacers that you stick to the edge of the glass to keep a perfect gap between the two pieces of glass. You dont want all the silicone to get pushed out, you want a small gap of silicone around 1/16" between the two pieces of glass. You are more then welcome to come check out my tank and see how Miracles did it on my new tank if you would like.

I forgot, Kelly's can get starphire but it is a custom order. I have heard the best place to get starphire and normal for that mater is www.glasscages.com. I would not buy one of there tanks, but they do sell sheet glass for a pretty good price.

If you wanted to try acrylic, Delvies carries it and will even cut it to size for you, they're in SLC
http://www.delviesplastics.com have all different thicknesses too...
