"Nothing in the sea falls haphazard; if we cannot predict, it is because we do not know the cause, or how the cause works..."H.B. Bigelow, 1929
This is for you Jeff/Bugzme.

If there truly is a factual reason for why things are, why do people so often ask for opinions and look to opinion polls on how to keep a reef tank?

Opinions anyone? Wink

I think its true, because if you do something new and your NO3/NO4 spikes then you know what you did caused the issue.

In my opinion its true, do to the fact that we are not just trying to keep one life form but trying to keep a whole ecosystem in check. while the ocean have trillions of water and millions of lifeform to keep from going downhill. Animals have vets but what do we have only ourself and others that have experience. Just one single thing can make the whole reef go wrong and without proper knowledge we cant know what will happen next or what have cause it to go wrong.

I think we ask to confirm our own hypothesis, not looking for opinon but experiences.

I think there truly are factual reasons for why things are (in reef tanks and ocean), its just that most of us do not know what these are.  You have to be a biologist/chemist to know these types of things.  So we poll for opinions/experience because that is the next best thing.

Some of the things that happen in the sea (as in all areas of life) are still not known even by those biologists/chemists.  I think that is one of the factors that interests me in the hobby, the fact that it is an adventure and there is such fragility to it all.

Thanks,
Chris

Opinions are just how each person interprets the experiences and knowledge they have obtained while trying to impart it to another person.

Thus in our quest for knowledge related to our fish tanks (and other areas of life) we ask for opinions hoping to glean the gems of knowledge that can be imparted via others and help us along our way to better our tank.

IMHO

I don't get it.

He posted something to get discussions going because you said nothing was happening. I took it as a "Well lets discuss!" Not as a jab at you. Looks like it may have worked though the board has been pretty active today!
