In my quest to reduce bubbles in my small sump (5 gallon) I'm about to fire up a new skimmer (external to my sump) and can't decide whether to try baffles in the sump or have the water enter one side of the sump and flow through a pile of live rock rubble on it's way to the pumps.  I really like the idea of using the live rock but I'm  concerned about the amount of detrius that might settle in and around the rock.  Has anyone done something similar to this?  Is there a critter that could be used/housed in the sump to keep the detrius to a minimum?  Do you think it would help to reduce bubbles?  Or should I just put the baffles in and forget about it?

Jon - When I pulled out the bioballs from my sump b4 you built my new sump/refuge I considered doing the same exact thing.  I read a few posts on reefcentral where people did this and they would just blow off the lr with a turkey baster on a weekly basis.  Other than that I don't know?

Jon, I have a 40 gallon sump under my 120.  1/2 of the sump is a refugia and the other half has a Berlin skimmer.  I have had the same problem with bubbles in my tank.  I recently put live rock in the same side with my skimmer.  I also have some crabs and snails in the sump also to clean up the area.  If you do this, just make sure that you have a screen or something over your intake to your pump so that you don't suck them up.  There are many different ways to deal with the bubbles issue.  Another is to put a sponge near your pump so the water has to go through it.  But make sure that it is a couple inches below the top of you sump or it will get clogged and overflow.  Hope this helps.

you should try using a sponge to block it from the pump. And its nice added filtration.
