Topic: I'm back! Posted: September 06 2013 at 4:13pm |
I joined the club as a poor college student years ago and WMAS, and especially Mark, helped me setup a small reef on a budget. I had three different tanks before "leaving the hobby" to move to England for my MBA. My heart never left the hobby, I checked out LFS across Europe (am I the only one that finds it interesting to see what they are like in different parts of the world?), wrote a final paper on a marketing strategy for LED aquarium lighting, etc.
I was eager to set up a new tank when we got back, but wanted to wait until we closed on a home, then decided to wait until my son was born. Unfortunately after that my little girl, who was four at the time, was diagnosed with cancer. She battled leukemia for three and a half years, and unfortunately passed away two and a half months ago.
Here's a video of our little family not long before we lost her:
In January, while we were living in the hospital, I bought a 45 gallon tank. I needed a distraction. I finally got it set up in the last week. I've already enjoyed it a lot and feel like it will be great for me and my son to do together.
My current system is a 45 gallon tank (half the footprint of a 90), 150 watt halide lighting with a little bit of LED supplement, 15 gallon sump, skimmer, and UV sterilizer.
This will be a mixed reef, but I'm hoping to get more SPS than I have in the past.
I look forward to buying frags from you all!

Brady -
I kind of know what you are going through; I lost my wonderful wife of 26 years to cancer about 3 weeks before your little girl passed.
Glad to see you are back.

Thanks all for the kind words. That may have been a bit personal to post, but I've become pretty open over the last few years.
Brett - next time you're coming to see your in-laws send me a text and come check it out.
Bob - very sorry to hear about your wife. It is heartbreaking to watch someone you love so much go slowly. I hope you're handling it as well as you can. Hit me up if you ever need to talk.

Hey Brady, welcome back! You actually know me from ski racing days at Brighton. I skied with your brother and Derek H. all the time. Hit me up sometime I'd love to talk salt and skiing.
