    Posted: May 29 2005 at 10:56pm

I just purchased a new 120 AGA and have a quick question about lighting.  I am planning on using my VHO setup from my 55 (4x110).  Do you guys think this will be enough lighting for my corals?

Bubble Coral

Colt Coral

Frogspawn

Kenya Tree

Brain Coral

Mushrooms

Polyps

Green Slimmer

couple small acro frags

Thanks

I would suggest MH for acropora; it's all anecdotal but I believe it.

I say nowhere near enough light.  I'd double it.

Save yourself a lot of money, and get MH first, save up and get them because in the end no matter what else you have, you will want MH. Use your VHO's for supplimentation.  Two 250 DE HQI Pendants would be sweet.

So, are you guys suggesting I do this:

Buy two 250watt MH on top of the 440 I have now?

That would give me a total of 940watts for a 120gallon?

Forget all that wattage/gallon mumbo jumbo. That is not a good measure of light intensity.

The use of MH lighting for SPS growth is pretty much necessary on a tank that size, unless the coral are just 6" from the VHO tubes, or unless you place the tank in front of a window with direct sunlight reaching it half a day.

I've got two 250W MH pendants over my 120g.  I'd recommend the Aquamedic Ocean Light 250 for such a setup.  Works great.  You could then just add your VHO's for supplemental actinics at your discretion.

Wow, funny you should say this.  I just bought that exact setup from aquatica.

Excellant choice, That is what I have also, except the 150 lw Oceanlight pendants.  I love mine on my 65g tank. You will have to post pics when you get them up and running.

That is exactly the plan for my 90g.  I may do T5's instead just depends on what I can get cheaper.

With this setup (2x250 DE HQI MH and 4x110 VHO) on my 120, would I be able to keep pretty much any coral/clam with this much light or would I need to add 1 more 250MH? :)

That should allow you to keep just about anything.  Many would suggest 400W'ers for better growth, but you should keep everything alive and growing.
