Hello everyone. I am new to the club and new to the hobby. I have always wanted to be a marine biologist and two years ago after I had an aneurysm burst in my brain, my sweet husband decided to buy me a fully stocked 34 gallon redsea max. I spent most of the day staring at the tank and doing as much research as I could. We quickly added a 66 gallon redsea to our house. After I filled both those with everything I could, we had a heater break and boil our small tank. I was devastated and cried like I had lost my children when I removed all my coral skeletons. We decided to combine what we had left and upgraded to a 120 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump. I am still trying to learn what to do, but I am loving adding new coral babies to my tank. It is so nice to be involved with a group of people who are as passionate about this lifestyle as I am. Can't wait to learn everything from you all! Stacy Carter

I don't trust heaters. I run 2 heaters that are undersized one in the sump and one in the display. If I have one that malfunctions It won't ruin my tank. Also I use separate temperature controllers on each heater. From all the horror stories I have read I will never run a heater with out a temperature controller. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+4416+23735&pcatid=23735
One other thing that is mandatory in every tank is a titanium grounding probe. This is one piece of very important equipment that doesn't get talked about very much. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/catalog/product/view/id/2175/

In addition to my welcome, it seems you guys are already into this a bit now. Consider a tank controller like the Apex by Neptune Systems. Not only does it do so much more but it would have prevented and alerted you to the problem of the broken heater. You'll never do a tank again without one.
also +1 to the idea of multiple smaller heaters. I have 4 smaller ones as softplan mentions above. Two are set just under my target temp. Two right at. The tank controller turns off the outlets when above the target temp and will alert to high/low temp conditions.
Best of luck and again welcome!

Thanks everyone! Ok... A few questions. We are looking at the Apex controller, but I am curious as to what probes you all have or would like to have. Softplan, what does the grounding probe do? We have a titanium heater in the sump now and I check it twice a day to make sure we are good. Any other suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks again!

Grounding probe are for if there is a short in the tank or stray voltages from power heads, heaters, etc. The probe plugs right into the ground of an outlet and collects the electrical in the water and prevents any damage to corals or fish.
The apex can be setup with a temperature probe. You then setup the parameters so the controller will turn on the outlet assigned to the heater when needed. I still have those temperature controllers plugged into my apex and always have power run to them. The reason behind that is my sump is in the basement and my display is on my main level and I didn't want to buy a 2nd temperature probe for the apex.
