bare bottom refugium?

   I have been out of the hobby for a few years now and just finally got back in.  I'm amazed at how the technology has changed to make reef keeping easier.	I have been doing some research about refugiums and have noticed there are quite a few people now running bare bottom refugiums.  They have a chaeto and live rock refugium and have a thriving tank.  Is there anyone on the board here that runs a bare bottom refugium??  My sump seems to be too small to have a sand bed that is beneficial.
