Topic: fresh water----> salt water?? Posted: July 04 2012 at 11:40am |
So i know that you can convert the fresh water puffer fish to salt but what other kinds of fresh water fish can you covert?? I am not thinking of doing any besides a green spotted puffer but there is a couple i ran over the internet that i wondered about like the beta- which i dont think can work, but what other fish can be converted??

Green SPotted Puffers (GSP's), Monos (Argentus and Sebae), Scats, and some catfish. Though it should be noted that these fish aren't really freshwater, but brackish. That's why they can be adapted to full SW.

The small amount of salt that Petco/Petsmart puts in their freshwater tanks is to try to inhibit disease in the seriously stressed fish they keep in their awful systems. That should not be confused with the needs of fish that live wholly or partly in the ocean. I stay away from those stores except for equipment on sale or that I can't find at Walmart.

Freshwater bettas are not very strong swimmers and if you did convert one it would likely struggle with the flow in a reef tank.

Typically if a fish doesn't live in a brackish habitat the added salt will kill it. Brackish fish have adapted to the higher salt content, and their bodies have the systems in place needed to remove all the extra salt. If you put a full FW fish into SW even if gradually you will reach a point where you fry the kidneys and the fish will die.

Mollies, Platy's, Guppy's, Some rays can go both ways, and bala sharks believe it or not, but its not the fact that you can put one in when its 4 inches, They nearly have to be full grown before you can slowly acclimate them to a salt tank, with a low salinity.. The max 1.020.
