Topic: Friend w/ a coral bleaching problem ? Posted: January 05 2005 at 4:40pm |
I have a friend that is having some problems with bleaching.
All of his softies are doing fine, but the majority of his SPS are bleached out
(not white, but fairly colorless). However he still has pretty good polyp
extension, ao they are not dead. All of his normal water parameters are ok. CA,
ALK, etc ..
He is currently running a 90g w/ sump and fuge, RO water
tests ok, 175w or 250w halides (10K) w/ PC actinic.
He moved about 3 months ago and got new bulbs at about the same time ... Maybe
bad bulbs (UV)?
Did i miss anythig .. i bet i did
Any ideas for him?

Lots of softies??? Could it be due to the stress of the move, the lighting, and chem warfare??? Is he/she running a good reefsafe carbon???

There's so many things that can cause bleaching it's scary. Temp swings is a big one... as is stress.

Change causes stress and too many things changing at once can stress a living organism to the point of breaking.
A wise man once remarked, ""There seems to be little evidence that the Creator of the universe was ever in a hurry. Everywhere...there is evidence of patient purpose and planning and working and waiting."
It may be prudent for this friend of yours to follow the ways of our Creator when she...uh, I mean he attempts his own creation.

I've had three of my favorite stonies bleach within the last few months... I have contributed all to temperature swings.
