Topic: Mixing Salt Posted: January 31 2016 at 5:27pm |
I'm filling my tank tomorrow! For the sake of ease on this first time i'm just wanting to mix the salt right into the tank is this ok? It's not going to have any livestock just yet i'm just going to let it cycle while i finish buying the other things I need first. Light, Skimmer, Heater, etc.

It would be better if you mixed it outside the tank. You can take out five gallons of water and mix it very strong but make sure the salt dissolves completely before returning the water to the tank. This will prevent the salinity from going too high due to salt dissolving after the correct level is reached. Do the bucket a few times and you will reach the level you want.

I just started adding salt to the water, but like Krazie says it's a guessing game for the most part.
I mix about 2.5 cups, per five gallons, to get about 1.025 SG.

What brand salt are you using? Generally 2.5 cups of salt makes 5 gallons of water at 1.026 specific gravity. That should give you what you need to get in the ball park.

I used some Coralife salt a friend gave me just to get salt into the tank but I will be using Red Sea Coral Pro. My tank is currently at 1.019 specific gravity. I plan to raise it to 1.025 for my reef.
