Sounds like hydroids, the appear as a tank matures and go away eventually.

They need very specific conditions to continue their life cycle, these aren't met in an aquarium so they die off soon after they appear. It's a normal thing to see in a newer tank that is beginning to mature.

Here's a pic of a hydroid with copepods also living alongside on the glass.

The hydroid is the fuzzy thing. The small crustacean is a copepod. If you look at your tank at night you'll see copepods crawling on live rock, glass, and everything else. They are beneficial life in any tank.

The Hydroid is the large round thing with tentacles. It's body is smaller than a pin head. The copepods are the smaller things. The animals you can easily see crawling on rock and around the sand are Amphipods. Technically speaking, none of these are crustaceans. Crabs and shrimp are crustaceans. Here is an Amphipod, typically 1/4" long but some can reach almost 1/2" This is a greatly magnified pic of a copepod. Though "Tigger Pods" used for fish food are much larger, the actual size of typical reef aquarium Copepods is no larger than a leg segment of the Amphipod.
