Topic: What in the H__L just happened?? Posted: December 08 2008 at 2:58pm |
I moved my hermits, the only shrimp I could catch and two of my cucs to another tank while I treat for red bugs. My tiger tail is fine and moving about the tank but the black cuc.....
He was completely out on the sand bed when I removed him. He shot off a think black string that was tough and very sticky. It was like super glue getting it off my skin. There was 12 feet or so of this. I thought he was just stressed but it was a very non eventful move. So, is alive but his back has opened up with a large red looking pillow and long thick white tenticles are coming out of it. They are 4 inches long and there are 30 to 50 of them....
I got pics with my cell phone and will try to post them tonight....
Is this normal?? I have never seen anything like this before, kinda creepy.

I know that cucumbers (if this is what that is) can "jettison" there intestines if they feel stressed. Its a defense mechanism, If that is what it is, it is a very bad sign. (or so I have been told in the past)

That could be, I handled him so very little Id be suprised he felt in danger. He is in a tank with no fish so thats a good thing..... The pillow thing it still attached and he is moving about but the strings are gone....

That is normal for cucumbers to do that, you have never seen the movie jackass have you? It is not good for them but it doesnt mean he is going to die. They typically do it when they have any unnormal pressure applyed to them. I have had mine do it before just by handling them, the ones i catch in the ocean need a little pressure to have them spit it out

I hate cucumbers! They can kill an entire tank if they really want. PTHHHH on them! IMO

I love them and they do a wonderful job of cleaning the top layer of the sand bed. I dont have any low pumps so I really do not worry about them. In fact my tiger just split, very cool.... He is still crusin around so I guess I will not worry about him, it was the coolest thing Ive ever seen though....

I would have a very hard time believing that. For one they could never catch a health tang. They move very slowly and if one happened apon a sleeping fish it would have ample time to excape. I think your tang was either dead already or to sick to flee....

It split and the tang picked at the loose ends of the cucumber. so the cucumber toxiced it.
the Tang should have left it alone but if the tiger didnt split then the tang would have left it alone.
